I need to leave the house!!!!

I live in Toronto, it is snowing non-stop and I have 13 month-old twins. We own a Maclaren stroller and it really hard (impossible) to go out for a walk with snow on the ground. How do you go out with your twins? BTW I don’t have a car during the day… my husband take it to work.

I take them out, but I have a car. I never take them in the stroller in the snow.

Maybe you could get a sled? I just bought my girls a sled that they can both sit in, one in front of the other, and then we tied rope to the front to pull them.

If it's snowing a lot and you don't have a car, I second the sled idea! (Unless you are super-buff and want to take them in a ski trailer and pull them behind you -- there are people in Boulder who do that!)

We also have a Maclaren, and wound up getting a jogger partly because the Maclaren can't handle even a tiny bit of snow. With the Mountain Buggy, we can still go for walks as long as there's only a few inches. It also has a "storm cover" (purchased separately, but totally worth it) that keeps it pretty toasty warm in there. If you have any money to spare, you could keep an eye out for a used one on Craiglist or something. Especially without a car, I think it would improve your quality of life a lot.

Or, could you drive your husband to work (with the kids along for the ride) and then you'd have the car during the day? It seems like a pain, but it might be worth it not to be trapped in the house. I'd go stir-crazy for sure.

We live in Toronto too, and I can relate to how tricky it can be to get around in the snow.
Generally we go for walks with the stroller when the sidewalks are somewhat clear, and we don't do really long walks in the winter.

We have a Graco Duoglide stroller which isn't exactly "snow-savvy", but it works fairly well, except for the odd unshovelled bit that we have to trundle over or cross the street to avoid. The sled idea is good if there's been a heavy snowfall, but I wonder how well it would truly work on our sidewalks, since there are patches of concrete mixed with patches of lumpy ice and patches of snow. Does a sled work on bare concrete?

Do you have an Early Years Centre near your house? If so, you could brave the sidewalks for the walk there and back, and the kids could get some exercise while at the centre (we haven't been to one yet, but I hear they're great for helping the kidlets blow off some steam).

Hi there from Barrie, I have a little more snow than you! haha

I had 2 little sleds when they were that small, and just pulled them together, I'm sure there is a double one u can get though!

you'll for sure need the sleds when u get the 25cm they're calling for this weekend.

    Good luck to you

    Hi,

Yeah, we do have an Early Years Centre near us but the toys are disgusting! They look like they haven’t been cleaned in years. We decided not to take them there until they are older and stop putting things in their mouths.

I agree that the sled idea is good if we had more snow, but in Toronto we get a mix of snow and concrete. Plus people don’t really clean up properly and my stroller is too wide. Can’t wait for these two to walk properly and then I can walk with them!!

I am in Ottawa and our girls are 13.5 months so I can completely relate to your situation. We have a Graco Duo Glider and it isn't too good in the snow.

Have you seen the wagon/sleigh at Lee Valley? My parents bought the girls one for Christmas which I haven't seen yet as it won't be opened until Christmas Day but I have seen the catalogue. It is for all 4 seasons. There are wheels that can come off and be replaced with the slidy/sleigh things (not sure what to call them). Perhaps this is a solution. Maybe the wheels are good enough for the Toronto sidewalks.

Or, the daycare we were going to had a really good wagon with big wheels that she used to pull 2 infants in on a daily basis in the snow (not our girls but some other kids). She never seemed to have any problems.

The other alternative, the Chariot (expensive) or another jogging stroller with bigger/better wheels. My friend uses the double Chariot in the snow all the time for her 2 & 3.5 year old at the same time.

Good luck - winter can be tough.

We also have a double Chariot and while we don't get as much snow as you guys do we've had 2 good dumps already this year and the jogging wheels are great in the snow. You can also get ski attachments for it if you're really feeling frisky! They also stay bundled and cosy inside. Well worth the money. Check out MEC's online gear swap site- there are often people selling them there - that's where we found ours.

I'm in Montreal and I wouldn't be able to get out without our double jogging stroller - ours is made by Running Room, and it's got nice big bicycle-type tires so I can push it through 1/2 a foot of snow on the sidewalks if I have to. My twins are the same age as yours, and I don't see how a sled would work - unless they're strapped down, my boys will dash off in different directions, which is not what I want to worry about when we're walking down the street!

Would something like a radio flyer wagon work?
