I am so bummed out. Last week I failed the three hour test and yesterday I went to the diabetes center. I learned all about what to eat and how many times a day to eat. My life will now be centered around eating since they want me to eat every 2-3 hours. With taking the blood an hour after I eat the main meals I am trying to figure out when to take my much needed nap. Anyway, today for breakfast, I had a half of a wheat bagel and some cream chz. Like I was told I could have. An hour later when I tested my sugar it was 137. They do not want it to be higher then 120. I am really hoping that this does not mean I have to go on insulin. How many of you that had/has Gestational Diabetes had or has to take insulin?

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this complication! I passed my 3 hour so I can't offer any advice, but I am thinking of you and hope that things work out for you!

i was on insulin 2 times a day with my last pg..The diet wasnt working and I had to start shots..

WIth this pg Im only taking insulin shots at night, because right now my fasting sugars are the only ones that are high..

I find it strange that they are having you test 1 hr after eating, I test 2 hrs after eating and my BS is supposed to be under 130. My fasting needs to be under 105. I guess every dr is different, but testing 1 hr after eating seems a little soon, and not giving your body time to regulate itself

For breakfast I eat eggs, with cheese and low carb bread with peanut butter..

You will find that you will need to eat protein with every meal you have carbs. Being that bagels are carbs you should have somethign protein, like peanut butter, or bacon, sausage, eggs, cheese..

Like I said I have to do insulin shots, I was not given the option of taking pills. i didnt have to do the GTT this time because i am insulin resistant and they knew i was gonna have problems.

GL if you need anything just let me know. I will do my best to help or get info for ya.

Thanks for the info. I am definitely going to ask about why I test my BS an hour after I eat. Also, the levels are different. Mine are not suppose to be over 120 an hour after I eat. I go back on Tuesday so I hope to get so answers. Obviously, if I have to take shots I will but when I asked if they ever put people on pills they told me no, only shots. I thought that was strange also but like you said all Dr's are different.

I'm a nurse and have a lot of experience with diabetics. With that in mind, I can't understand why they would want you to take your BS an hour after you eat. Anyone, not just diabetics would have an elevated sugar because the body breaks it down and it hits the bloodstream right around that time. I will say that I don't have experience with gestational diabetes. Only with insulin dependent and non insulin dependent patients. Continue to do as they say, but please write down all of your questions. Don't expect to remember them all at the time of the appt. Make sure that you ask about anything you think might be confusing and keep asking until you feel you understand it. Also, don't be afraid to ask that someone else explain it to you. Sometimes it's takes someone with a different way of teaching to explain things clearly.
Good luck and let us know what they say.

yeah my dr doesnt do pills either..Im not sure if its a PG thing or what...

Maybe look up GD online and get as much info about numbers and when you should test that way you go in ARMED with info...

The shots really arent that bad. I can hardly feel them, the needles are very small...its more of a pain to watch what you eat. Are you keeping a log of foods and times? I have to do that daily.

But yeah i would ask why taking it 1 hr after eating and not 2, I think if you took it at 2 hrs you might be able to meet that 120 level

    GL hun

I had GD, but I've also had twins for 7 months, and can't remember if I tested 1 or 2 hours after eating, but I do remember it was supposed to be under 120 after meals, and under 95 fasting. I honestly just ate the same thing every day for breakfast, lunch and snacks, so I didn't have to worry about my levels. The only thing that varied was my dinner. I didn't have to take insulin. I just remember eating lots of peanut butter!

gday Jen. I have GD too am my diet has taken a dramatic turn - insulin will be required for me if I have 5 high readings a week.
Im going the way of littletwinmom by eating the same boring food that I know wont cause high readings and am saved only by a delicious sugar free dark chocolate! Ive lost 2 kg over the 2 weeks Ive been doing this which cant be so good... good luck with yours - not too much longer!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing about taking it an hour after you eat. I did not have GD, but my DH's niece did and she always tested 2hrs after she ate. Even with the 3hr test, they expect your level to be high after the first hour. It is the second hour that they look at mostly to see if it is under a certain level. I would be definetly talking to someone about it.
