Gerber Freeze-Dried Mini Fruits - CAUTION!

I just wanted to mention this because it concerned me pretty significantly, and I want all of my fellow twin parents to be informed!

We had fallen in love with Gerber "Freeze-Dried Mini Fruits". In particular, the Apple flavor. The boys loved them, and one day we got stuck at the car dealership for 3 hours while they checked out an emergency braking issue.... I got hungry, so I shared a bag with the boys out of desperation. Here is the disturbing part: several of the pieces I ate tasted like either dirt, chemicals, or bleach. I threw away that bag and opened another bag on another day, only to find that the second bag was the same way (I was eating them this time on a long car ride necessitated by some impromptu napping!). About 80% of the pieces tasted pretty good, but the other 20% truly tasted toxic. It really freaked me out because my babies can't tell me what they taste like, and I do NOT want to be feeding my babies something that could be dangerous like that.

I am going to write to Gerber, but I want all of you to be informed so you can take the level of caution you'd like to. :)

(Side note: Does anyone know of any preferably organic, or even non-organic, NON-GERBER alternatives to these tasty, bite-size, baby-friendly treats?)

I bought something today at our local natural food store called Sensible Foods. They are organic, dried snacks and come in varieties like Cherry Berry (apples, cherries, blueberries and strawberries), Tropical Blend (apples, pineapples, mango and bananas), Orchard Blend (apples, peaches and apricots), among others.
    very tasty

Oh my gosh! I would call Gerber directly. Did you save any to send to them? I'm not sure of any other freeze dried organic snacks like that, but do you have an organic grocer or a health food store nearby? Perhaps they sell something like that.

Yikes. Costco sells something similar in the snack section, only the fruit is in bigger pieces. It's the same consistency though, and melts in their mouth.

I bought these last night at walmart. Based on this post, I think I will be returning them and getting my 3 bucks back. I will be looking for a better alternative too!

Egad. I wonder what the deal is with those? I hope you get some answers from Gerber. That's scary.

I like this brand, that you can find at Whole Foods or Fresh Market or places like that....it's a little pricey, but it's good stuff:
