The past 24 hours my son has spit up at every feeding. We try to burp him before, during, and after his feeding but nothing comes out. The only time the gas gets released is when he spits up. We've tried holding him for a long time after he eats, still spews. We've tried the car seat, still spews. We tried just laying him down. and you guessed it he still spews. He eats EBM from a bottle so I know its not a formula reaction thing. I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary or really strongly flavored. We bought some of the little tummies gas drops but I'm kind of afraid to use them, he's still so small. I'm not quite sure how much he weighs but last week at his dr's appt he was 4 pounds 3 oz and he feels to be atleast 4 1/2 if not closer to 5 now. I don't really know what to do, this is my first child and I'm clueless about what will help and what won't. ugh Any advice for the frustrated, clueless mommy?? :unknw:
I used them on my little ones when we brought them home, they were a little over 5 lbs each. Zack's discharge weight was 4 lbs and something though.
I know when mine were first home they were close to five lbs even. I don't know how much you are feeding him but mine really only ate 1 to 1.5 oz every few hours. It seems like all babies are different but mine seem to eat less than other babies. Maybe you can try feeding him less a little more often. I used the drops right from the beginning and I would just mix it in with the bottles. It really seemed to help. Mine also get ebm and I know that they digest it faster. Mine definitely go through phases with the spitting up, sometimes it seems like they spit up the whole bottle and other times they are fine. It always makes me so sad when they spew all over especially when it comes out their noses and they start coughing
You can give the gas drops Allison. Also, it is extremely important to get those burps out, because it sounds like they are what is causing the spit-up. I have had a couple of really hard to burp babies and I just kept trying different postions, walking and burping at the same time, a little bouncing(not too much!) and giving the gas drops after the feeding and I would always get one to come up. If I didn't, I knew that most of the bottle would come up sooner rather than later!
I think the gas drops are prefectly fine so long as you don't go over the recommended dosage. My babies were crazy pukers too, but it finally subsided around 14 weeks. We still get spit ups but not the major ones we used to.
One of my girls still spits up like crazy and has since we brought her home! Pedi said not to worry unless she was having trouble gaining weight or seemed like she was in pain. Gas drops are a lifesaver, for the random occaisions where she seems uncomfortable. Give the gas drops a try, and feel free to call your pedi just for reassurance, that's what they're there for!
I've given my litte one the drops, doc says it's fine, give the lower dosage. .3 I think Also, I noticed with my little one that the faster the flow of the nipple, the more spit up there is, so you might want to make sure it's a slow flow nipple, that way he takes it in slower, and that might help. Also, are you patting his back when burping? If only patting, try also rubbing his back in circles. That always helps with Aidan to get that burp up. Good luck!
Everyone had great suggestions. Also, could it be something that YOU are eating? I know if I eat garlic for some reason the girls are much more gassy and spit up. Also milk products is a big one. Hang in there!
James was our puker (and Dave too when he was a baby - gallons of puke spewing forth!) what really helped us was finding a burping position that got the burps out fast. We had to lay him so his arms were hanging onto my back and his tummy was pressed up against the front of my shoulders then pat him on the tushie pretty hard. For some reason that position caused him to burp fast. You might have to experiment with positions with your little one.
My youngest twin had problems burping and the trick they taught me in the NICU was to put her on my thigh, sitting, and to hold her under her chin basically supporting her jaw bone and rubbing her back right along her spine from her butt right on up her back, it kinds seems like they're going from sitting slouched to sitting real straight when you do it. That was the only was she would burp. My DH and MIL tried everyhthing cause they were afraid to hold her like that but it was the only way with her. Best of luck and Congratulations!
