Gas-causing foods -- do you eat them?

I was craving chili so I made some last night, but am afraid to nurse the babies now because I don't want to give them horrible gas pains from the beans and onions and peppers! They're two little gas bags anyway, so I'm really nervous about hurting them by giving them foods that are KNOWN to cause gas.

So what do you guys do? Do you just avoid foods like that? Do you pump and dump and then feed them stored BM or formula? OR do you just throw caution to the wind and nurse them, figuring that they need to be exposed to all kinds of foods anyway?

And part two of that question is: how long does it take for food to leave your system anyway?? Like how soon after eating something like that would it be safe to feed the babies without worrying about the gas? I think for wine they say four hours? Same for food??

I didn't purposely eat foods that I heard were gassy, but if someone were to give me something with say.. onions in it, I'd eat it. I'd say try it.. don't not breastfeed because of it and just watch to see if it affects them at all. I didn't drink at all while breastfeeding.. or pregnant.

I'm a vegetarian, so I eat plenty of legumes. I've never noticed any foods giving my babies trouble. Go ahead and nurse, I bet they'll be just fine! Little babies are gassy anyway, I doubt that your diet would make much difference. :)

I ate all of the "gassy" foods with wild abandon and it made no difference whatsoever. If you think about it, the gassy foods are mostly gassy because of the way they break down in your intestines. The babies will have milk, not the food itself. That's not to say that babies never react to what their mother's eat but there is no reason to presume they will. You can read more about this on Kellymom.com.

I ate anything and everything. Babies are gassy little things, no matter what!!!

And in regards to alcohol, most references will say it is okay to nurse if you have had a drink or two, try and time it that you drink right after bfing so that you most likely won't nurse for 1-2hrs. Then alcohol leaves your milk just like it leaves your blood, so if you are okay to drive you are okay to bf :)

I have to admit that I've never really gone out of my way to avoid anything other than 1) Alcohol (more than a glass or two of wine) and broccoli (which I don't even like!). I eat chili, chocolate, etc. and I've never noticed any really adverse effects.

they said not to eat this-that, then they said to eat good, the list of avoidable was so large, almost all dals(legumes) and so many veg, so i chose to eat good as it will increase the milk now i m having them all and babies are happy coz they are getting enough milk,
