Gagging herself?

My dd has recently started sticking her fingers down her throat on a regular basis. Yesterday, she made herself throw up! She does it mainly toward the end of meals, usually about the same time she starts throwning food from her tray. I am guessing its b/c she is finished/bored, etc... A lot of the time she will still continue to eat (pick at) her food for a while. She is a VERY picky eater, and eats very little.
So, what do i do about this? she is just starting to understand "no" although she usually laughs at me when i say it. I have considered pulling her out of her highchair as soon as she starts??? But she hasn't eaten much yet. I have just recently started signing with her. I hope she gets "more" and "all done" soon!!!!
    Anyone else have this problem?

One of my girls does this, but not while she is eating. It has been getting alot better. She would walk around the house or do it while we were in the car. Sticking her fingers down her throat and gagging.

I would just pull her fingers out and say yucky, no, stop and make awful faces. It took her about 2 months to get over it. Now she does it once in while because she thinks its funny to make that lovely sound.

I would definitly pull her out of her highchair. She should learn very quickly that she may get pretty hungry if she doesn't stop. Look for other signs that she is done; picking at food, throwing, playing. My other daughter is a very picky eater and would always play with her food. I finally started to take it away when she would start playing with it. About a week later she learned I was not going to play games and let her play with her food. Now she eats a little better.

    Good Luck

this is a normal behavior - both of my kids have done it - when you react - that makes it more interesting for them. They get your attention.

My dd did it for a bit in the car because she was bored. And if I freaked out, she continued to do it. As soon as I ignored her, it stopped in 2 days.
My cousin did this a TON when he was a baby ------ 20 years ago. He only did it in stores while on his mother's back in a hicker's back pack to get attention. So yes it's perfectly normal. I also would get her down as soon as she plays. Mine have learned that once they are down, meal time is over.

I posted this a little while ago, my son has done the same but recently stopped. He's about the same age (and was a refluxer on Prevacid). I basically ignored it, and without noticing ... it stopped.

mine do it but they're getting 2 yr molars so they stick their fingers all the way in the back to chew on them - DS threw up last night!

Seriously, ignore it. I know it is hard, especially when there is throw up involved but my dd Arwen went through this for months. I used to get very upset and say "NO!" and try to stop it but soon I realized that she was interested in my reaction to it and kept doing it for the "negative" attention. She thought it was funny when I reacted to it. I started ignoring it and eventually she stopped on her own. She no longer does it at all. I also read that some babies will gag themselves as a result of trying to chew on their fingers to relieve the discomfort of back teeth coming in. As they try to chew on their fingers that far back they accidentally gag themselves.

I know what you mean. That sound is just awful. I used to have to turn away and cringe when she did it so she wouldn't see my reaction. I swear it made me feel like puking at times.

My son did this for a long time too. I would just pull his hand out of his mouth and try to not make a scene. It did seem like if I did make a big deal or shout "no" or gag myself (lol) he would do it even more. He did make himself puke on occasion. :bad:
Eventually he did grow out of it, thank goodness. Yours will too!
