So I found out 2 weeks ago that my ultrasounds only show 1 large anterior placenta. I haven't really been able to find out any info about this condition. Anyone else had this and if so.... what does it mean? Twin A is measuring smaller than his sister, and even though my dr mentioned TTTS, I know that can't occur with fraternals, but could it impact their growth?

I'm not an expert, I did have fused placentas but don't know a whole lot about it. But your doc probably mentioned TTTS because from what I do understand, the placentas can fuse to the point of sharing the same blood supply. If one placenta takes over most of the blood supply, the other placenta (and baby) are not getting adequate blood flow.

my twins had a fused placenta (anterior also) but we fortunately didn't have TTTS - oh and from what I understand TTTS can happen with fraternals to varying degrees...

I had a fused anterior placenta and had no problems what-so-ever. In fact, my twins were gram for gram the same size when they were born. The doctors and nurses are still commenting on how weird that is.

No problems here with fused placentas. They were born at 37.5 weeks and only 3 ozs apart.
Honestly I've never heard of fused placentas causing TTTS.

interesting. I thought TTTS was only with identical twins

I have read this too...although I think it's extremely rare. My twins' placentas were close enough that they could not confirm they were frats until they could tell their genders were b/g. In all cases of twins it's always possible to have one twin lag behind b/c their placenta just isn't cutting it. So your docs will monitor you carefully. No matter how it's happening...whether it's really ttts (which in the case of frats is pretty rare) or just a placenta that's pooping out, they need to watch your babies carefully to see if at some point it makes more sense to deliver. but hopefully your babies grow just fine! try not to stress about it too much.

Thanks for the info ladies. I did some reading yesterday on TTTS, and found an article that said that while it can happen with fraternals, it's extremely rare. I try not to worry, but as I'm sure you all know, that's easier said than done. We were TTC for 9 years for this pregnancy, so now that it's almost over, it's sometimes like waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Besides, what with being 50lbs heavier than I'm used to, tired all the time, bored, and a really nasty chest cold, I have WAY to much time to think right now.

Anyone know if vick vapour rub is ok to put on the chest when pregnant? I know I'm allowed Ricola cough drops, and I think Fisherman's Friends, but vicks would help break up the congestion. With 2 babies already crowding my lungs, I don't need them full of snot too!

I had a fused placenta and mine were a lb different in size. Baby A was 5lb11oz and baby B was 6lb12oz's, but it didn't take long for him to catch up with her!!!

I used Vicks throughout my entire pregnancy - I had TERRIBLE sinuses when I was pg and Vicks was the only thing that helped...

Another fused placenta here and my boys were more than a pound apart at birth but didn't have any problems associated with their placentas being fused.

This is somewhat related but a little different. I had a fused placenta and didn't know so until delivery. The docs ended up missing another part of it (twice) and had to have a D&C at 6 weeks post delivery. A few days later, I delivered the rest. Not fun. Be sure they have it all when you deliver. Ask them to send to the pathologist to be sure!

The OPer delivered her babies in Jan. and they have since come home from the NICU.
