This is the sound...."uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" and so on

I don't know how to describe the sound he makes other than to say it kind of sounds like a motorboat. He does it for long periods of time when he's playing or getting ready to fall asleep. A friend of my MIL is a speech pathologist. Although she did not hear him do this, we described it for her. She thinks it may be his way of concentrating, but I don't know. Does any one have any ideas?

I don't know why he does it - maybe it is that he is concentrating - but it sounds cute!

We always said our girls made chicken noises when they were settling down to sleep.

I don't think I can even begin to type what they sound like but it isn't the stereotypical cluck, cluck, cluck noises. It's pretty funny actually!

Lauren does this type of "moan" when she is concentrating or trying to fall asleep, maybe it's the same thing. Lois calls it the "foghorn" and another of my friends says it sounds like a constant moo from a cow? :pardon: This is also from the girl who self-soothed at a very early age and doesn't take a binky. I chalk it up to just being a little thing in her personality.

I bet ya it's no big deal. :hug99: Maybe you should mention it at their 18 mo. appt. for peace of mind.

Sounds like it may be a self soothing sound. My Nick hmmms putting himself to sleep.

Thanks everyone! Jacob is actually making that sound right now while he plays with his truck. It's funny that he does it while playing and not just when he trying to get to sleep. That was the reason for my worry, I think. It's not just a bedtime thing. I don't want him to be so upset with something that he has to self sooth even during the middle of playtime. I know. I know. I'm just a worrier!

    Michelle,
The way Lois describes Lauren's sound is perfect. A foghorn is what it sounds like exactly.

Sorry about the typos in the first post. My goodness. I am a smartie! :)

    Hi there-

My son did the same thing, from a very early age (like 3 months!) He sounded like a cow, or a cell phone on vibrate we said! :) He did it in the car a lot, or while playing. He didn't do it to sleep. I do think it was a self-soothing thing (he liked the feel of the vibration in his throat?) or he did it when he was bored. We found it very annoying after awhile and actually would ask him to stop once he was old enough to understand.

Anyway, I think it is something some kids just do, for various reasons. Bored, tired, self-soothing, etc.
