The girls were born at 36w6d and came home within a week of birth. They were on premixed formula at the NICU and for the first few days at home. Then we used a bottle of water for mixing formula. That's gone and we're now on tap water. We drink our water straight from the tap without problems. Is it safe for the babies? They like room temp formula so we planned to just keep a jug out. Does it need to be boiled? I've read that boiling can cause minerals and chemicals to concentrate in the water as the actual water boils off. There's just so much to learn.

Also, for the past two days, they've had lots of poopy diapers with very loose stool. At first, the stool was a bit more firm (while on the premixed formula). Should I be worried about this? They're eating well and don't have fevers. They did great at the dr's on Wednesday: jaundice is no longer concerning and their weights are up.

What does FTM in your title mean??

Mine were 2 months early so we were told by our Ped that their water had to be sterilized for the first 3 months. I would call your Ped and see what he or she recommends. Once we stopped doing that, we just bought Nursery Water in the gallon form. I dont drink water out of our tap so I didnt want to give it to them. :pardon:

Our had pretty loose stool when they were first born as well.

    How old are your babies?

We use tap water at room temp in a jug, but for the first 3 months we boiled because the pedi told us to.

As for the poop, I think it depends on their age. When my boys were little they had lots of poopy diapers but only 1 or 2 now. You could always call your pedi and ask.

I never used boiled water - we used spring for the first month until DH got the fridge filter hooked up and then we used that water...if your tap water is suitable for you then its suitable for them!

My ped okayed using our tap water without boiling it. But, that depends on the tap water in your area.

I used Nursery Water. Is it watery loose, or just squishy? It's always nice talking about poop firmness.

We boiled tap water for six months but that probably wasn't necessary. I would premix the days worth of formula in a jug and store it in the fridge.

Our girls had mushy poops for a long time. As long as the doctor is okay with it and they are gaining weight I don't think it's an issue.

we use tap water also. In the first several months, the girls had really loose poops, and only later did it start to get more formed.

i'm guessing, but maybe First Time Mom?

We used bottled water ... we have a poland spring dispenser in our kitchen, so we always used that. Ours liked room temp too, so we just dispensed it into a pitcher and let it sit around.

I thought full time mom too, but then first time mom make MUCH more sense

We used either filtered water (brita and then our new fridge's water filter) or bottled water. I never used tap, but thats probably because I don't drink our tap water.

I still use nursery water, but we do not drink tap water ourselves..Our boys were on the premixed for 6 months because for us it helped with colic and gas problems and their poop was always lose and green the pedi said it was ok now they are on the powder and their poop is more yellow and thicker depending on what solid foods they ate now that they are eating them. I would ask your pedi cuz they all have a different opinion on things.

Thanks for the responses! FTM-first time mom Between this forum and the Parents.com forums, I get the abbreviations mixed up. The girls are doing fine. They have plenty of wet and messy diapers, so I'm not as worried. They are drinking well and don't seem too gassy. I ought to get going. Time to nap before the next feeding. I think we'll order a filtering pitcher.

My husband has a RODI unit to clean the fresh water for his salt water tank so i use that water for the girls. I will say tho that when i do give my girls the ready to feed food, the stools are very liquidy and more seedy, and they will go more freqently, at least once a day. When they are just on the powder and water they will go every other day if not every 2nd day, and it is more the consistancy of soft serve :p
