Doctor just called to let me know I failed the 1 hour Diabetes test..I have to go in for the 3 hour.. anyone who has experience please help me I am driving myself crazy

    1. Is the one hour test wrong a lot compared to the three hour test.

    2. Is it my fault because I don't eat well enough?

    3. What happens if I have GD?

    4. Are my babies in danger?

I am going crazy and not sure what to think..I did not eat or drink anything before the test so that had no impact on the outcome..I did take it kind of late at like 28 weeks or so would that have an impact?
Thank you so much for any info...

I think it is fairly common to fail the first test ~ you and your babies will be okay :hug99:

    1. It is very possible for you to go in there and pass the 3 hour test!

    2. No it is not your fault. however your diet can alter the results of the test.

    3. If you have GD, you need to go by the diet that they give you. (basically cutting out sweets and junk) Depending on your condition (physical) they may have you do some exercising (I was on bedrest so that was out!)

    4. Your babies will be fine, as long as you follow medical adivce, what happens to GD babies is they become very large before birth, and when they are born they have a problem regulating their glucose levels and can cause breathing problems.

check out this web site http://www.diabetes.org/gestational-diabetes.jsp

Good luck and you are going to do just fine Momma!

I failed the one hour with my previous pregnancy and passed the 3 hour. With my twins I passed the one hour which really surprised my OB-she said that a lot of her twin moms fail the one hour and have to do the 3 hour so it sounds very common.

I know 2 people who just failed the one hour and passed the 3. So it definitely happens. I failed both, so I was put on the GD diet during my pregnancy and you have to check your blood sugars 4 times per day. It was a pain but I was able to control it with diet, so it wasn't that bad. The diet is no fun because you're pregnant you should be able to eat whatever you want, right. But I didn't gain a ton of weight at all, which was a plus to it all.

Thank you so much to everyone your responses really helped to calm me down..I have decided not to jump to any conclusions until after the 3 hour test..than just deal with what ever the outcome is..It seems as though a lot of moms on here have been through it and did not have any complications so that makes me feel great! :D

The other thing about GD (as well as pre e) ...the condition is caused by the placenta. It is nothing that you are doing right or wrong, but how the body and placenta respond to various things.

If you have GD, it can very often be managed with diet. Much of it is about balancing carbs with proteins.

I had GD with my first, but not with my second. It's annoying, but not bad. As long as you stick with what they tell you. Don't skip testing. Don't lie about what you ate or what your numbers are. Uncontrolled GD can lead to other problems. Keep it controlled and all will be well. I had to balance carbs through my day with protein and veggies. I had to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks. Sometimes I had to drink a glass of milk in the middle of the night because my morning numbers were so low. My baby was just fine and full-term. Just 7lbs 1oz. So, not too big at all. My friend had GD at the same time I did and she couldn't keep hers controlled with just diet so she had to give herself shots. But her next pregnancy was fine too.
As pp's have said you didn't cause it. It's just how your body is reacting to this pregnancy. And many people do fail the one hour test and have to take the 3-hour. The 3-hour can still come out fine.

Went to gynae today for cramp like symptoms, and they do a routine urine dipstick. Was told that my color was a little 'off' and that could mean I have GDM too. I guess I can't offer you much advice but only a supporting shoulder because I understand what you're going through right now. Let's keep it up mommies!!

Between my two pregnancies, I have failed the 1hr all 3 times I have taken, and past the 3hr all three times I have taken it.
Mine were always in the 140's for the 1hr...just enough to do the 3hr.

I went in for the 3 hour right after I found out that I failed the 1 hour.

Don't even stress, I failed my one hour and passed my 3 hour just fine. I think with twins many times the 1 hour can be off. Even if you do have GD it can be regulated with adjustments in your diet depending on how bad it is. Just relax and see what happens, I'm sure everything will work out just fine. By the way I was a terrible eater during my pregnancy, I couldn't help it. :(
