Hello! I'm a bit freaked out. I am an IVF expectant twin mom and had light brown spotting at 6.5 weeks. I went in for the ultrasound and they said all is fine, my babies both had heartrates (Baby A pretty good FHR of 130 BPM and Baby B lower at 114). The nurse said not to worry that spotting was very common during twin pregnancies. That was on Thursday.

BUt now it's Sunday and I am bleeding (red blood, not brown, with spots). It started last night around 1:30 AM when I got home from a wedding. I was standing from about 8 PM until 12 PM - not sure if that made a difference or not? Anyhow, the blood is not spotting anymore - it's heavier, dark red, and almost like period blood. I have to wear a panty-liner to keep it from getting on my underwear and have to change it every few hours.

So I'm FREAKING OUT. I know the one twin had a much lower FHR but the doctor said it wasn't in the scary range, just on the lower side of normal.

I'm going to call the doctor in the AM to try and get in for an ultrasound, but I'm wondering if anyone else had this happen too? I had a miscarriage with a singleton last summer at 7 weeks (but no blood) and am worried it's happening again. I really want both babies to go full term.

So anyhow, i'm just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences?

I understand how you must be feeling right now. I had quite heavy spotting for three days, including passing small clots of blood, when I was 7 weeks pregnant. I panicked, but wasn't able to get any reassurance from my midwife and doctor until four days later. I tried to remain calm, laid in bed as much as possible, and drank a lot of water. I hope you are able to get some answers quickly. Please take care...
By the way, I am now 37 weeks pregnant and I have had no other complications with this pregnancy. According to my doctor, twin pregnancies are much more prone to spotting/bleeding. I hope that is the case with you.

Oh sweetie, I know how scary this is. I would say it is time for a call to the OB and possibly a trip to the ER. I know that it's not fun, but you need to be sure of what is happening. It is common to have bleeding, but it seems like quite a bit and I would get checked.

I would call your Dr today anyway or goto the ER. I did have bleeding in the beginning, not quite that heavy though. I had a sub-chorionic bleed causing mine.

Sorry to hear about the bleeding, and hoping for the best.

Don't worry about the standing up for several hours - couldn't have done any harm and you are not to blame!!! Things may very well be OK, but definitely get yourself checked out. We are rooting for you!

NO news yet and still bleeding....on and off, clots. My fertility clinic is open in the AM and I plan to go in for an ultrasound. I figure they are the most experienced with IVF twins/bleeding situations. Have already left a voicemail. Will keep you posted. Am so nervous about this...

You really shouldn't be waiting around, this is what the ER is for. They will do your u/s and get in contact with a specialist if that is what you need!

Is there an on-call OB available at your clinic that you could talk to now? I think that just to be on the safe side that would be the best thing to do if you are continuing to bleed & having clots. If there is no on-call Dr. I would definitely recommend going to the ER *just to be safe*!!
    Please keep us posted

I went to my fertility doc first thing this AM and got an ultrasound. THANK GOD everything is okay. Both are doing well, both now have heartbeats over 120 (which I guess is in the normal range- he said 120 -160 is normal). One's BPM is 123 and the other is 128. He said that bleeding occurs in approximately 20% of pregnancies and doesn't mean anything is necessarily wrong and that bleeding is way more common in twin than singleton pregnancies.

There was a little bruising in my uterus (something about the placenta...forget what he said) but he said it was a very common pregnancy thing and could be what's causing all the blood.

    So I am RELIEVED!

Thanks to all for your support. Yesterday was horrible!!

Congratulations. Excellent news. I know the feeling of relief. Make sure you take it easy. By the way, when this happened to me at your stage, my doctor told me to take precautions. She said no sex, no exercise, and no lifting. Did yours suggest any precautions? Any which way, I'm very glad everything turned out okay.

I had the same thing happen to me at 9 weeks with the girls I also did IVF - it was a subchorionic hemmorrage. It was scary but they told me that it is pretty common and that there is really not much you can do for it. They did tell me not to stand more than 2 hours at a time and not to lift anything. I put myself on bedrest one weekend and after that I never had any more problems with bleeding - I do not know if the rest did the trick or if it would have stopped anyway??

    CONGRATULATIONS on your babies!!!!

I am glad to hear that everything is okay. I had spotting when I first found out I was pregnant and just a few days ago, I am 12 weeks and 2 days along as of today. It is scary, but you have to call your doctor and get it check out immediately. Luckily when it happend to me a few days ago I had a doctor's appointment the next day. I was told to rest, drink lots of water, not lift anything heavy, and no fun with the hubby (poor hubby, he is wonderful though). Both my OB and peri said it is normal and try not to freak out when it happnens, and call if you have any concerns. I am very happy to hear everything is fine and you have two heartbeats! Take it easy and good luck!

They just told me "no sex" but now that you mention it, it's probably a good idea not to excercise or lift as well. Thanks!

I am soooooo happy to hear your news. I will never forget how scary that is. Take it easy... don't do a whole lot of anything until it passes. Drink lots of water. It really does help keep you hydrated! I had had a m/c a few months before getting pg with my twins and when I started spotting, I was terrified! What a great excuse to have everyone wait on you for a few days! My babies are now almost 5 months old! I hope your pg goes well from here on out!

I had a two very scary bleeding episodes in my first trimester. I did IVF and when I went in for an emergency u/s at 6 weeks thinking the worst is when I found out I was carrying twins. I had a subchorionic hemmorage tucked up behind one of the placentas. The RE could see it on the u/s. He said that I would spot off and on for a few more weeks and he was right and then one day...no more bleeding. From what I have read (nothing scientific) it seems like the bleeding occurs in more women who have done IVF-something to do with the hormones from the injectibles. Like I said, nothing scientific but it made me feel better. Oh and I went on to deliver 2 boys at 32 weeks without anymore bleeding, I just got pre-e so I had to deliver early. Best of luck to you. Stay off your feet as much and you can and I totally ditto-no sex! Best of luck to you for a happy and healthy pregnancy!
