I obviously have fraternal twins (b/g) and I swear I have no twins in my family...anywhere. Am I the only one like this? My mom and I must have searched for hours one night and all we came up with was a set of ID's(based on the fact that they looked exactly alike). And even then they both have been dead for like 10 years. I thought it was supposed to skip a generation? Is this wrong? I was reading pdxpeach's post and it got me thinking again....

you may have had twins in your family that didn't make it past 9 or 10 weeks gestation. i would imagine that prior to u/s technology no one would have ever known.

Every woman who ovulates has a shot at having fraternal twins because just like there might be a month here and there where you ovulate early or late or not at all, there can be a month where you ovulate two eggs. It doesn't have to run in the family and, in fact, seldom does. The families where twins do "run" are women who have a genetic tendency for multiple ovulations and it can happen in every generation where a woman descends from a woman with the inherited tendency. A pattern of "skipped" generations is a myth. HTH!

Hey - I wrote a twin wiki article about this because I have no twins of any kind in my family and I wondered where they came from.

Women get older having babies, increasing the chances for twins because of hormonal changes. Also the number of pregnancies can play a role, the more pregnancies, the more chances. It doesn't run in our family either, but I was 33 (now 34) at the time ... my 3rd pregnancy ... who knows?

I just read Jenny's article so I must be one of the lucky ones! I am not overweight, i'm 5'5", I'm 24, this was my 1st pregnancy, i'm white, I not a big dairy person. Woo Hoo! Let's just hope I can get "lucky" again w/ my next pregnancy!

BTW..Did any of you see that show on DHC/TLC (i can't remember which one) that was about a lady that had 3 sets of twins? They said that her body was prone to releasing more than one egg when she ovulated. How crazy...

I wonder about this since like you I do not have any record of twins, 5'6," not overweight, was only 31 when I conceived, 2nd pregnancy, white and not big dairy really, and vegetarian to boot! I am done having babies for now, maybe I will want to in a few years, but doubt it and I worry I would get twins again.

Are you are talking about Siobhan? She has 13 kids, including 3 sets of twins. She is a member of TS. She posts mainly in the Triplets/Large Families Forum. Her screenname is HealysBakersDozen.

You also have a greater chance of having twins if you just came off of the birth control pill

And Depo isnt like the pill so there is no way they could tell you that you didnt take it right and thats why you got pregnant. LOL!!
