Fraternal or Identical?

I did a poll on the first year board when the boys were about 7 months old. Now that they're 16 months, I thought it would be fun to try it again.

And yes, I want to have them tested but DH thinks it's a waste of money. He says it will become more obvious as they get older. Of course, we disagree on the answer and I suspect he simply doesn't want to be wrong [IMG]

These are all recent photos where they are both looking at the camera (not an easy feat, you know...)

I didn't look at the pics but if they have the same eye and hair color, they are probably ID. Our girls didn't look super alike at the beginning but continue to get more ID as they grow. Just get the test done, it just such a relief to finally know. We did ours at 10 months for a Christmas present since we were so sick of explaining how we just don't know since our ID's were in separate sacs.

I don't know. They definitely look identical, but I have met some people that their kids looked exactly alike, and they said that they were fraternal. My girl look a lot alike, but not exactly, you can tell slight differences, well I can because I'm their mother, but the doctor told me that they were identical. No test were ran, but that's what they told me right after delivery.

I am sitting here cracking up! How can you have any doubts they are identical?? They look like mirror images of one another! They are so cute, too! Trust me, they are identical. I would wager money on it and not just 20 bucks-serious money.

I was lucky, I work in a nursing home and one of my patient's-her granddaughter is a geneticist and she offered to run the zygosity test for free to test some new equipment they had just gotten. I was on the fence in the beginning because mine also had separate sacs and there were some differences in the beginning that made me hesitate. We had the test done and it came back 1 in quadrillion or something that they weren't identical. I remember I was so excited-I felt like I had won the lottery. It is exciting. I'm not sure what the cost is but I would think it would be worth it just to know for sure and have that peace of mind. But I really, really think that your babies are identical. Look at them!

My girls were in different sacs, too. However, they did share one placenta. This is the first time I have heard of anyone else besides me that had twins. For some reason, my doctor said that that was a good indication that I may have twins again.

But like I said in pp, my girls were said to be identical.

I voted identical, mine did not really start looking a lot alike till about 1 1/2, we have known since they were born they were identical but I questioned it for a while because they looked so different to us. As you can see, they look a lot alike now, Dh tens to confuse them [IMG]

I voted for Identical. They look alot alike. Just waiting till they get older is not the 100% way of telling if they are identical or freternal. I know of fraternals who look so much alike that you would think they are identicals. I have seen identicals NOT look alot alike and you would think they were fraternal but infact they are Identical. So The best way to tell is to have them tested. I had my girls tested at 16months. My girls are Identical.

They look identical to me (sorry, that was me voting for "Not sure but leaning towards Fraternal", I clicked on the wrong one).

OK, I didn't want to bias the results by giving their stats BUT... They weigh within a few ounces of each other and always have, are approximately the same height, and have the same head circumference. So, they both have the unusual proportions 3% weight/50% height/75% head circ. DH says, "Of course they are the same size -- you feed them the same" [IMG] Their heads are a different shape but in case you didn't follow my helmeting story, this is to be expected after their issues.

I guess deep down I know they are identical but we were SO SURE they were fraternal when they were tiny (didn't start to really wonder until 5 months) and DH still thinks I'm nuts to even consider that they could be ID given our ease with telling them apart.

I found another face shot from Oct where the head shape disparity is more obvious:

    Pumpkins

Anyway, thanks for entertaining my compulsion to know for sure. I just wish I knew how to convince the miser that $160 is worth ending any doubts/debates.

This thread made me laugh ou tloud! DEFINITELY IDENTICAL!!! Trust me, my girls are sooooooo easy to tell apart, even if you're only around them for a few minutes, but they are identical. Your boys look soooo much alike -- I'm sure you as mommy can tell them apart, but I sure can't from the photos! Feature for feature they are the same. Definitely ID!

Well, I voted Identical. They look so much alike in the 1st picture with grandpa and the last picture in the wagon. But in the middle picture, they didn't look as identical as I thought. I maybe should have voted "too close to call", but something inside me says identical.

If it is only $160, I'm ready to get a pool going to send you the money! Gosh! Only $160?? I figure if each person sent you $10, we could raise it in a heartbeat!

Definitely identical. Just so you know, I think my boys look not very much alike but they are ID without a doubt. My DH can't even tell them apart all the time (how embarassing is that) and the rest of the family will ask them "which one are you?" for the rest of their lives. I kind of feel bad about that, but what can you do? Will has a tiny freckle on his left temple, but as soon as his hair grows that will disappear.

Not always true...my girls have the same eye color and same hair color and we know for a fact they are frats (different blood types).

However, your boys are so cute! I would go with identical too! They seem so to even have the same hair (thickness, style, etc). Whatever the answer, they are adorable!

My husband, myself and my mom have been able to tell my twins apart from day one. My husband and mom confuse them from time to time but only from afar. I never confuse them. Based on everything you said and the pics-trust me-they are identical without a doubt. Think about it-what are the odds that two fraternal brothers would share that many traits by ACCIDENT? Fraternals are no different from other siblings. The sperm and egg have different genes-what are the odds the genes would be so similar in both and not be identical? Pretty low! I am willing to pitch in 10 bucks towards a test to ease your mind!

I always click on these threads and I've come to the conclusion, If you have to ask, they're identical.
I think your little cuties are definately identical!!!!

In my own case, we have never done a test. The OB was sure I was having faternals. The Pedi who attended the birth was sure they were identical because the placenta "didn't look fused" (there was no lab in the area capable of testing it.) At birth they had different head shaped, Bianca had started down the birth canal and had typical baby cone head. Gabby had the round c-section baby head and they had different skin tones (maybe a slight placenta flow issue?) It was easy to tell them apart by birth, but by 4 months is was getting harder. My 7 months few people could tell them apart. Now the only difference is the look in their eyes and their facial expressions. I just accepted the pedi was right, they are identical without a doubt.

My girls were in sepearte sacs and placentas. I always thought they were fraternal. My pediatrician kept saying he thought they were identical. So, when i had them tested for lead they also ran the zygosity test, and they were identical after all. But my point was i never paid anything, they tested the blood taken for the lead test.
