My guys are doing mostly all breastmilk, but formula if I'm outta milk at the moment. A lot of times, they of course aren't hungry when I make the formula bottle....and I thought you had to throw it out after two hours? I just got some Nestle Good Start samples, and it says to throw out after 24 hours. Which is it? I hate throwing out almost full bottles of formula, and would love to put it in the fridge till they ate it (within 24 hours!).

    I'm talking about powdered formula...

    What do you do???

if you refridgerate it after you mix it, its good for 24 hours. if you leave it out you have two hours. if they start the bottle, but then don't finish it, you have to throw it out.

one thing that my friend who is nursing and supplementing with formula does is put the powder in the bottle and then if she needs it, she adds the water, shakes and serves!

Formula that hasn't been heated is good for 24 hrs in the fridge, like pp said. Once you've heated it, you have 1 hr. (Or that's what I thought - maybe it's 2 hrs?)

Once they have taken a drink out of it you must use it up within 1 hour. You can pre-make it & keep it in the fridge for 24 hours.

It's good for 48 hours in the fridge, mixed. So long as nobody has drunk from it.

    Can infant formula be frozen?

Infant formula should not be frozen either before or after mixing. Freezing formula may cause it to become grainy or cause the fat to separate.

Once the baby has drunk from the bottle, can I refrigerate the formula for later use?

We don’t recommend that formula be fed again once a baby has nursed from the bottle. During a feeding, the baby's saliva can come in contact with the formula in the bottle. The enriched nutrients found in infant formula can create an excellent breeding ground for microorganisms to grow. Unfortunately, neither refrigeration nor reheating will prevent this growth, so we recommend that any unused formula be discarded within 1 hour from the time baby's mouth first came into contact with the nipple.

If I heat the formula and the baby does not take it, can I refrigerate it and reheat it again later?

We do not recommend that the product be heated, then refrigerated and heated again.

How long can I store prepared formula?

As a general rule, it is safe to refrigerate prepared formula in a sealed container for up to 24 hours. Some prepared formulas can be refrigerated for even longer than 24 hours if stated on the product label. Always check the specific product label to determine storage conditions and time. Do not exceed the recommended storage times.

This was cut and pasted from the Similac web page!

    Hope it helps...

On the Enfamil Gentlease, it says 24hrs in the fridge, 2hrs left out w/out them starting the bottle, 1hr after they start the bottle due to slava breaking down the proteins (told this at the hospital when we asked).
