So, I fill my ds Dr.Browns bottle with 6oz water, add 3 scoops formula and 1tablespoon of rice cereal (for reflux). After its all mixed the bottle has approximately 7oz of liquid in it...so if my ds eats all of it does he have 6oz of formula or 7? Basically do you go by how much fluid you started with or how much is in there after mixing?

Funny, this question comes up every once in awhile. I did it differently, and I think the wrong way. I put the formula scoops in, the rice in, and added the water up to the 6oz line. So they were getting 6oz of liquid(y formula+rice cereal!).

Doing it the way you are doing it, I would go by the end result of the liquid amount. So if they drink it all, it's 7oz. But then again, it's only 6oz of nutrition(but maybe the formula nutrition allows for the extra oz of water?). So, really I have no idea.

I mix my formula in large amounts and then pour the bottles. Whatever amount the bottles are upon giving it to the babies is what I count. Although we only use Similac Sensitive formula. For a time we used Infamil AR and Similac Sensitive [to get the Added Rice], but even then, I counted total oz.

I asked it about 18 months ago! :) I wound up deciding to just go by how much was in it after I added the formula. I figured it I were to pour pre mixed formula into the bottle, they would still drink 7 oz. I also got a little crazy about it b/c when it's only 4 oz, it doesn't really make a difference. The whole thing made me  ! I don't think there is a right answer, just be consistent with what you end up doing.

I mix large amts too, 60-70 oz of water a day. I noticed on the container of powder from costco it says to make 26 oz of formula (I think that's what it said), use 23 oz of water and xx scoops of formula. So I would say you count it as 7 oz of formula.

Yes, I usually count the final amount of liquid in the bottle. I put 5 oz of water into a bottle and add 2.5 scoops of formula (I know I know, not terribly accurate, but that's how much they eat right now). It ends up being 5.5 oz of formula total. That's what I count.

I totally had the same question. so I emailed the similac to find out also. So I expected a accurate answer. Basicl, they said they knew that add formula to the water would yield a certain amount of more formula. I think it was around 8 oz it add more the closest to another oz of formula. But they never said how to count the yield. I worry all the time whether or not mine is getting all the great stuff out of the formula or are they ending up with a watered down version of the mix. I think I just finally excepted the amount. I also make large amounts of formula and 50 to 60 ozs so we now just measure the proper amount of water 50 t0 60 oz (depending on what they are eating) and just scoop the amount of scoop 50/2=25 scoops. It yield more so we just pour up the bottles according to the schedule amounts and they seem to just fine with it.

I think when they worry about watering it down they are talking cutting the formula amt in half or so. I always add a few extra ounces of water to my jugs when I mix them, to help with constipation problems. So I use 70 oz of water, but only scoop enough for 66 oz of water. 4 oz of water distributed over the course of a day (about 8 bottles each), is only 2 oz for each baby, works out to less than a 1/4 oz in each bottle. That is far from watering it down, and no different than adding a 2 oz bottle of water in per day.

My first dd had major problems with constipation, and so far her little sister is having the same problems too, so I add a bit of water as habit now! :)
