I've been exclusively breast feeding our DD's since they were born, and was thinking about using formula to mix with their rice cereal. I don't have much of an EBM supply built up right now, so using formula with the cereal would help take some pressure off of me.

Some friends of ours gave us an unopened can of similac, and when I mixed it up it smelled awful and kind of metallic. I have no experience with formula prior to now, is this normal? The experiation on the can said use by April 2009, so is this a case of it just being older, or does it all have that smell regardless of the use by date?

    Thanks!

I did think that formula smelled bad, but if you are questioning the date, I'd go ahead and toss the can. But I also hate getting close to expiration dates.

Formula does have an odor to it. I agree w/ Gina if you are concerned about the date just toss it.

I wouldn't say it smells metallic, but it definitely is not the best smelling stuff. I too would probably toss it though, if it's past expiration. Many doctor's offices have $5 off coupons for formula, maybe ask your pedi for some, and that way, the formula would at least be a little bit off. And actually, they may even be able to give you sample cans of formula too, ask them about it. Mine were always giving me any free samples they had, since I had twins.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm just going to toss it to be on the safe side.

I have some coupons that hospital gave me when the girls were born that are still good. I'll pick up some new stuff.

    Have a wonderful day :)

I would toss it. We had to switch my girls formula so I kept the old kind and after they were older I opened a can and even though it hadn't expired it just looked and smelled funky. I threw it out.

don't be surprised if a fresh can is a little funky. formula just never has the best smell. but my guys never seemed to care about the taste difference between BM and formula.

If in doubt, TOSS! Your gut instinct is probably right!

Or you can buy a new can and compare with the old if you're interested...I'd still toss the one that was given to you...

Formula does have a funky smell and if you concerned about the date, I would definitely toss and get something fresher. Good luck!
