Peytons has been sick since about last Tuesday. When I started to give her cough medicine at the begining of the week, she would remind me before bed that she needed to take her medicine. Around Friday, she decided that she has had enough of medicine. By that point she was running a low grade fever. Sat. I bring her to the drs. and get antibiotics. She fought tooth and nail and actually spit the stuff out. Sunday she had a fever of 103.5 so I sat on top of her, with her arms pinned to the sides and shot as much of it to the back of her throat as I could. She hasn't been eating much at all, and I am taking her back to the Dr.'s again today.

Any ideas on how to get her to take her antibiotics? I switched to a chewable form of cough medicine (after the strips didn't work out either) but she is also catching on to that. Do they have injectable antibiotics? It may come to that if she doesn't start getting better. Peyton has always been my better eater and I am just so worried about her.

I hope Peyton is feeling better!

We place the syringe as far back in the cheek as possible and blow on their face. I found that blowing in their face makes them swallow.

My neighbor wrapped the strips around the binky. By the time her daughter figured it out, the strip had melted.

Hope you get a few more ideas, I'd love some new medicine tricks!

They say you can mix any meds with root beer or chocolate syrup. I tried the root beer once and it worked. They say it hides the taste of anything. Just make sure you only give them a little bit at a time!

    Good luck!

My sister never liked to take meds and hates the flavor grape to this day because of this. Maybe a bot of coercion is in order? I'd try offering a treat in exchange for her taking the meds or mix them with somehing she really likes(antibiotic with yogurt or a milkshake)

I used to get the small drinkable yogurts, punch a hole, squirt in the meds, then shake it up. Give them a straw and mine would suck the yogurt right down. The straw also keeps them from tasting some of it.

Hey there. Turns out Peyton has pnemonia. I brought her to the doctor three times in five days, because there was definately something wrong. Her fever was lasting too long, she was eating basically nothing, and was so lifeless. On Tuesday night she woke up crying, and after laying in my bed for 15 minutes cried that her tummy hurt. I took her to the ER but never saw a dr. becuase we waited for 3 hours, and eventually she felt better. The following day is when I took her back to the Dr. for the third time, was told to go to the ER in a different hospital for blood tests and x-rays. The Dr. there didn't think anything was wrong with her after examining her and didn't think the tests were necessary, but it was my decision. I told him that since we were there to do the tests. The x-rays showed the pnemonia. Makes me glad I stayed (and that I know my daughter so well!)

So now we are on antibiotics for 10 days, twice a day. My Dh has been holding he nose while I sit on her and squirt it into the side of her mouth. I don't want to risk putting it in food and her not taking it. Thanks for all the suggestions!

It's hard when they refuse. I hope she feels better.

A suggestion that worked when I had my nephew over, who refused to take it. I sat him down and explained to him on his level that he will be taking this medication regardless of how he accepts it. I told him that it's his choice to either take it nicely, even though he doesn't want, or me and dh having to hold him down. I told him exactly what will have to be done if we have to force him. The first day he cried bitterly, but he took it nicely. By the next day all I had to do was tell him - I'll have to squish your mouth if you don't take it. He took it nicely ever since.

Try this, it might just work with her.

We used to have a struggle getting our twins (21 months old) to take medicine. One actually threw up every time she had to take something. I finally gave them an extra dosing syringe so they could pretend to give medicine to their baby dolls. Now they take their medicine without complaining at all. I don't know if it was because it gave them some measure of control over the situation or if it became a game. But it worked.
