My boys are over 4 months old. I just got the book "Child of Mine" by Ellyn Satter and she recommends boiling the water used to make formula until the baby is 6 months old. Well now I feel bad because I've just been using the filtered water out of our fridge. Our pedi never said anything about not using it and no one else I ever talked to said I should do that. I'm just wondering if any of you do this or think it's necessary for me to start doing it.

Your advice is appreciated as always!!! :D

    Thanks Ladies!!!

Mine are 4 months and I stopped boiling their water about 3days ago. I just get mine straight from the tap (city water) and haven't had any problems yet.

I never boiled the water. We have City water, too, and I never saw it as a problem. Just don't use the hot water (it sits in the tank longer), use the cold. I would put a glass Pyrex measuring cup in the microwave and heat that (the handle doesn't get hot), and put the bottles in it. The big one is able to hold 2 bottles (we used Playtex Ventaire ones).

I was told to boil the water until my boys were 4 months old, but I think it is a preemie thing. Now I just use the Nursery Water in the gallon jug that you can buy at the store.

I never did. We are on city water and by all accounts it's really clean and healthy. I think you only really need to boil the water if you have concerns about your water supply, or if it's well water. We did use the cold water -- we'd heat the water on the stove, mix the formula in a big pitcher, then cool it quickly in a bucket of ice before pouring the bottles. (We poured a day's worth of bottles at a time.)

Certainly, if your kids are 4 months old and you haven't been doing it all this time, you don't need to start now. (Good book otherwise, though -- it will be really helpful when you start feeding solids!)

I have always and still boil the water. I know for the most part our water is good but there have been times where it has sediment if we have had a lot of rain(vancouver always) and we have had boil advisories in the past and felt it was just easier to boil and leave in kettle until I need it. That way I have no worries about there being any concerns cause I have already boiled it and it is always ready to go and once I have used it I boil the kettle for the next time.

We've never boiled the water. We used bottled water at first but now that our new kitchen is done we have a 'fancy' fridge so we use the filtered water from there. -Leighann

I have never boiled the water. I have always used water from a delivery company. We have never had any problems.

My grandsons were preemies and we never boiled the water. They are 7 months old and the larger of the two is 19 1/2 pounds and the smaller is 18 1/2 pounds. They came home at 4 and 5 pounds so I don't think not boiling the water hurt them at all.

we never boiled water. i did some research on it when my girls were born and found out that that is really ONLY completely necessary if you are using well water. we always just used water from our britta filter. your babies will be just fine.

Funny you should mention this. I have been religiously boiling water for bottles, sippy cups, cereal, etc. for seven months. I decided to call my doctor today and ask when I can stop. You know what she said? Three months ago.

If your babies are fine with what you're doing, then I wouldn't worry. If you live in a city your water is probably excellent. I trust Toronto tap water - it's among the cleanest and safest in the world.

We never boiled the water at our house. We have a Britta filter attached to our faucet so we've always just used that. However, when we visit my parents, they live in the country and have the well water, so I boil water there and then also run it through a filtered pitcher we got for my parents. Everything seems fine from doing that.

If I were to use the tap water in this town, I would be boiling water. It is actually yellow.. ~gag~ But we purchase bottled water for all our drinking/cooking water. For the girls' formula, we purchase Nursery Water from Walmart. It has added fluoride. No need to boil this water.

we never boiled either - started with bottled and then once the fridge was hooked up we use filtered from the fridge...the only reason I don't use tap is because I don't like the taste of tap water - but now at 17 mos my kids won't DRINK tap water - they demand bottled or filtered
