No help here -- I never even put barrettes or ponytail holders in if I can help it. They both have curly hair and hate having their hair messed with -- it's not worth the fight to me!

Ainsley has DH's curly hair, and she loves having her hair done. And I am lucky because she stay mostly still for it all.
I try and do it while it is wet. I use the Paul Mitchel lite detangler. I found the biggest space-apart comb/pick I could to catch it less in the curls.
From there, I just eye ball it for the part.

I find I can do a little better with stuff if I use some detangler and then comb and pull up. I can't do pig tails yet, but the spout.... I doubt I could get it straight, but if it's damp you'll have a better chance!

We don't do pig tails becaus eof this. I part my girls hair on the side and it parts naturally pretty straight.

If you do a zig zag pattern with your comb for their part, it's really cute and it's a popular style. Just take your comb and make a "sideways V pattern," back and forth. It's really cute!

I don't worry too much about making the part straight. I do my best with fingers and a comb or brush but if it isn't perfect it is ok. They wear their hair up just about every day because it falls in their face otherwise. I'm lucky that my girls love to sit for it and don't usually squirm. If they are really squirmy, I don't think there's much anyone could do to make the part reasonably straight.

Like Diane, I also use detangler spray to dampen their hair before I attempt to part it. It's much easier to part when it's wet.

My girls have very curly hair - so detangler is a must! I usually wet it with water too - so it is just like they are out of the bath. I have to put a small amount of gel in their hair also, because it gets very frizzy. Then I use a fine tooth comb to make a part down the center of their heads - and then usually the comb to pull each side up into the pigtails. I use one of the infant brushes to smooth it out too. It used to take me about 10 minutes + to do each one of their hair, but I have gotten the hang of it!!

My dd Arwen has the unruly hair. I HAVE to put her hair in pig tails everyday just to keep it out of her eyes. I basically use my fingernail and make as straight a line as possible down the middle. but the part in the back is always all over the place but I kind of like it like that. It's a cute mess ^_^ I really have no choice cause she often is fidgeting all over when I do her hair.

Lorien on the other hand has such fine and pin straight hair that I can barely get anything to stay in her hair. When I do get pig tails in her hair they generally don't stay there too long cause she pulls them out or they eventually slide out. Too bad cause it looks so darn cute and she often get mistaken for a boy (even when dressed in all girly colors) when we're out. But of course I think she is so beautiful so I don't really care what others think. I know she doesn't like having stuff in her hair so I generally leave her alone.

    too cute!

My daughter fights having her hair done so I just scoop and grab too. It still looks adorable even though it's not perfectly straight. I figure right now I am just trying to get her used to having me touch her hair everyday. Once she is more comfortable I will work on making it straighter.

I am lucky Katie sits very still and loves to have her hair done. I always put in baby hair lotion (used to be called nessel curl) and then part it while it's wet.

My ODD (not my twin) has crazy, curly hair. She loves to wear it in two pony tails. The best way I deal is spray it down every morning with detangling spray and then comb it all out, straight back. Then I take the edge of the comb and drag it down the middle of her hair, the hair tends to part itself naturall at that point. Works pretty well.
