If they are working on their pincer grasp then they can start on Cheerios, Puffs and other small soft foods like diced veggies, fruit or cheese. If they're slimey you can coat them in breadcrumbs, wheat germ, or Cheerio crumbs. If you're worried about choking then make sure the food is pea-sized and only give them a few pieces at a time. HTH!

We started puffs and cheerios at about 8.5 months. Puffs melt in their mouths as soon as saliva hits it, we tried them ourselves. We first did 1/2 puffs and then gave them a whole puff around 10 months. Once they seemed to master the puffs we went to cheerios. Then we started table food. We started giving them eggs, pancakes, waffles, pasta at around 10 months. I would start with the puffs first and see how they do. They don't need teeth, they mash things with their gums. My DS has 5 teeth and DD only 2, her bottom 2, but she eats much better than DS with table food, she loves it, whereas he would rather be spoon fed. They both only had 2 teeth when we started table food. When we started puffs DS had 2 and DD 0. Try the puffs, in 1/2 and see how they do.

When I started the puffs, I would break them in half. And gradually give them bigger pieces. I was worried right away about choking. THey love them now and cheerios too.

In my post I had mentioned about doing 1/2 puffs, breaking them in half. We have never had any problems with them not dissolving right away. Have you tried them yourself? DH and I both tried them and they start to dissolve once they hit saliva. Perhaps try breaking it in half, I'm assuming you gave a whole puff and that is why they started chocking. We didn't give whole puffs or cheerios until we knew they could handle the whole thing.
