Yesterday I went to my first twin clinic appointment (I am a public hospital patient which in Australia means I get top care in a beautiful new hospital for free BUT I don't get my choice of OB). They were really lovely and very thorough. I saw a OB, midwife and dietitian. I had read somewhere that with twins you need twice the folate, which I thought made sense so I asked the OB about it. SHe said the vitamins I was on weren't the best and to talk to the dietitian about it. Fair enough. The dietitian though didn't seem fussed, she said I only needed 600ug of folate. I'm geting 500 from my vitamins and the other 100 easily from my cereal, fruit and veg. SHe also didn't feel the need for extra Calcium despite the OB mentioning that this would be necessary. SO I am a bit confuddled.

What advice have you been given about your requirements?

My peri said one prenatal vitamin was enough and that I didn't need to double up.

I did take extra folic acid along with my prenatal vitamin.

I think a prescription prenatal vitamin with 1 mg of folic acid is enough. Most OTC vitamins only have 400 mcg, which is a little on the low side. And extra calcium if your diet is low in it is always a good idea.

I always took a calcium vitamin with a glass of orange juice in the mornings and then took my prenatal with my omega 3 at night (because of nausea) and I felt comfortable with the amount I was getting. My prenatal has 800 mcg of folic acid
