    Hey.
I went for my 28 week scan today (I'm 29 weeks tomorrow). On the scan that I had at 20 weeks they detected some fluid on one of my boys kidneys and they said it could just be a hormonal imbalance, they'd keep an eye on it and sometimes it can just correct itself. I chatted to one of my baby doctor friends about it and she said the same thing... and I trust her!
Today I went for a scan and the fluid had gone up from 7.2mm to 13.2mm and it had developed on the other kidney as well and it was at 9.4mm. First they said they'd book me in for a further scan with a consultant next week, then they said actually they'd wait for my next scheduled scan at 32 weeks. Fine.
Then went to the antenatal clinic for regular checks (blood pressure, urine etc) and to chat about the scan. The doctor I saw said pretty much the same thing and that when the baby is born he might need some antibiotics for a bit. But then she got really evasive when I started asking questions like 'Does that mean I might not be able to bring them home together?' and 'What the worse case scenario?'. All met with the same answers of 'We'll see when they're born' with a chorus of 'We'll cross that bridge when we come to it - don't worry'. No answers and i'm a bit panicky if i'm honest.
I realise that they don't want to alarm you but surely it's better to be prepared for the worse case scenario and then be thankful it never happened... I'm just so annoyed! Don't think the pregnancy hormones are helping but seriously... can't they just answer a question?! Grr!
So if anyone knows anything about this it would be great if you could tell me what you know, even if it's bad so that I can get my head around it. Oh and my notes say 'there is evidence of calyceal dilatation on the right (kidney)' - google search didn't reveal what that meant...
One the plus side they're a great weight, the girl is fine, and they're both head down - for the moment!
    Thanks!

I don't have any advice or information to offer. Just wanted to say I'm sorry you have to go through something so worrisome at this point in your pregnancy. It sounds like your doctors are staying on top of it and I'm sure if it was something that you really needed to worry about (or if the doctor felt that a specialist needed to be called in for the baby's delivery) you would know more details. But it is SO hard not to worry and even more difficult when you feel like your doctor is being evasive. Maybe call and leave a message on the nurses line saying you'd really like to talk to your doctor about this b/c you are worried and need to know more about his kidney concerns.

Ryan has fluid on both kidneys. It was found on our ultrasounds before he was born. He was put on antibiotics right after birth and had to have some ultrasounds to see how much fluid was there. He also had a VCUG (I don't know what it stands for) but it was a procedure where they put a catheter up his penis and injected dye and took a series of pictures to see if there were any blockages in the ureters (tubes between kidneys and bladder). Fortunately there were no physical problems with his kidneys, bladder, etc. Our pediatrician said that it is not uncommon for boys to have this and 90% of the time they will out grow any problems. He does see a pediatric urologist and they will follow him until he is 3 or so. Good luck to you and I hope you are able to find the answers you are looking for!

i dont know how much help i'll be but i wanted to tell you to hang in there.

they told me at my level 2 that one of my boys had fluid in his kidney's and that it's a marker for downs. i was so depressed and didnt know what to do or think. i have since went to a new doc who has told me that it's not an uncommon thing in boys and they watch it.

the fluid has gone down a bit since my last appt. so just try and keep positive. they say that even worse case scenario, it's not a bad procedure to be fixed when the child is about a year old.

    hope this helps. :itwins_boys:

No experience here with it, but wanted to say I'm sorry you have to worry about this and wonder what it means. I think the waiting and wondering are the hardest things to do. I'm sorry too that you have to wait until 32 weeks for another scan.

I'm glad you got some good news, the great weight and your DD doing just fine! :clapping:

  Momma. I'm sorry they won't give you any straight answers, but I'm sure they don't want to worry you with something that may turn out to be very treatable with antibiotics (like previous poster said). It is hard but I think if they were truely worried about something they'd tell you. Not that any of this makes things easier for you but I just wanted to say I'm sorry.
