We had an u/s with the peri yesterday and he said everything looked great, except there was a little fluid in each of baby b's kidneys. He told us all the possible reasons and that he would keep an eye on it. Has anyone had this happen? I'm sure it's fine, but I'm a little worried. He mentioned that the urine might not be emptying all the way or the tube connecting the bladder and kidney may be too narrow and he even mentioned it being a sign of Down's, which he highly doubts. He asked if I wanted an amnio, which I immediately said no to. He didn't seemed concerned, but he doesn't know me very well. I'm a worrier. The good news is that they are both weighing 1.2 lbs, which they seem happy with.

My girlfriend went through a similar situation. The doctors really scared the crap out of her and her husband and gave them all the worst possible scenarios. They went back for a follow up appointment soon after and it turned out that the baby could just really hold his bladder and he had finally peed and everything was back to normal. It was an unecessary scare in my opinion and my girlfriend had been through so much horrow with her pregnancy that that was the last thing they needed to deal with. But all that matters is that in the end, it turned out to be nothing.

My sister's baby A had fluid in her kidneys, too. They monitored it throughout her pregnancy. At birth she was given antibiotics as precaution and had u/s at one month and 6 months- she's 18 months old now and it's completely resolved. My sister was told that many babies at some point have extra fluid in their kidneys and it's never an issue, but because of the advanced technology we have (and with twins the increased ultrasounds) more cases are being diagnosed, but it's very rarely a serious issue. Try not to worry!

Is this the same thing as dilated kidneys? If so, that's what my regular OBGYN diagnosed my son Drake with, I went to a specialist a week earlier, and everything was fine. I worried a lot too, but found out it wasn't life threatening so that eased me a bit. Although I still didn't want him to have surgery if it was a serious blockage. So far so good with mine. I have another ultrasound next Thursday.

My baby B has the same thing.

We went through all sorts of worries, was told potential Downs, we met with the genetics counselor, and then they sent us to a more specialized radiologist. The radiologist looked through the new scan of our girls and found and determined it was nothing genetic (so no Downs) and he thought that he was a duplicate kidney, which is not uncommon. He put a consult in to urology and said I'd be monitored more closely by him vs. my normal hospital. So we've gone back every four weeks since and they keep an eye on the kidney.

Last week we met with the high risk doctor and she does not believe it is a duplicate kidney but believes it will be fine and to keep in touch with urology after the girls are born.

We actually met with the urologist today and he doesn't know if it's duplicate or not, he had a lot of positive things to say and said we can't do anything until the girls are born. He also said to make sure that the pediatrician does NOT do an ultrasound on her within the first 3 days of life because it will not give the urologist an accurate read on the kidney. If the scan is done after day 4 of life he'll have a better idea of what he's dealing with. A lot of positive things, he said she may or may not need surgery.

I've just decided there's nothing I can do about it now, I'm not going to stress, and I am not letting my husband stress about it. It's scary that the doctors don't know what's going on, but everyone keeps saying it's very common, there's just different scenarios that we're looking at and we won't be able to tell until the girls are born.

Stay strong, keep positive, and good luck! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or if you want to chat more about it...I know how scared and nervous I was in the beginning.

I had that with my first preg and with one of my twins, everything turned out fine for both. It got a bit worse on each US until about 28 weeks and then started to resolve and we didn't need to see a urologist.
Try not to stress, good luck

My best friend was told this with her last DS- She was monitored by u/s a few extra times, and it was just one of those things that corrected itself! I think by the time she was in her 3rd trimester all looked good! I hope you have the same results!!
