I was taking Fish oil, have for about a year, but stopped when I hit 28 weeks. The reason being, I heard you should stop taking anything that thins the blood (which Omega's do) about a month prior to labor. Since I wasn't sure when I would go into labor, I stopped at 29 weeks. I read that the thinned blood can increase your chance of hemorrhage during and/or immediately after labor. But, I am not sure if taking a few a week is a big deal or not? Does anyone have any info?

    Thanks,
    Molly

Did you stop eating fish as well?

My DW takes Omega 3 fish oil, because she does not like fish. I would find it hard to believe that it would do you harm, because then you would be cautioned to stop eating fish.

No reason to stop, I would say unless this applies to you...

Blood thinning effect will aggregate if you are taking other blood thinners. But if you have any heart disorder do not stop taking your Omega 3. It is always a heart healthy supplement. Tell your doctor

Hmm that is a new one to me too.

Just FYI though... I take Carlsons fish oil. They test for mercury levels.

FWIW -- my OB actually did tell me not to take fish oil supplements too close to delivery, for that reason. But it was like in the last few weeks before delivery. I started taking them again postpartum.

I'm by FAR a Doctor, nor do I suggest you adhere to everything someone or some Doctors say. I guess it comes down to choice and what you feel comfortable with. I guess my only arguement with the "stopping" of taking fish oils because they "can thin the blood" is that Omegas are by far the only food that thin the blood. I would think if it was that big of a deal, all of these food would be banned late in the pregnancies since they are ALL natural blood thinners...just some gee whiz stuff to read about...

One type of natural blood thinners are substances that block vitamin K. These include salicylates

Herbs and spices high in salicylates include:
    Curry powder
    Cayenne pepper
    Ginger
    Paprika
    Thyme
    Cinnamon
    Dill
    Oregano
    Turmeric
    Licorice
    Peppermint

    Fruits high in salicylates include
    Raisins
    Prunes
    Cherries
    Cranberries
    Blueberries
    Grapes
    Strawberries
    Tangerines
    Oranges

    Other substance high in salicylates:
    Chewing gum
    Honey
    Peppermints
    Vinegar
    Wine
    Cider

I was advised by my doctor to take fish oil during my pregnancy because it aids in fetal brain development and studies have shown pregnant women who consume omega 3s are less likely to have preterm labor symptoms.

Thanks for the list PITBULLZ, I drink peppermint tea every morning and most of my foods contain some of that stuff listed. LOL. Excellent point you make. Thanks.
