Okay.. so I got my first "wrong" twin comment tonight at the State Fair.. and at a Pro Life booth, guess they should read up a little more if the plan on giving out good rescources... I was sooooooo annoyed, I could of slapped her! But I didn't want to break a nail!

Anywhoooo there were all these examples of baby's in wombs and one had twins, so DH says "Look Jason that's how the twins look in mommys tummy" so she picks up the statue and says "Now these are fraternal, cause they are in different sacs" And me.. I was like "Ummmmmm NO" Not true at all and she was ready to keep going on about it... and I was like No way.. and DH chimed in and we were like "It's all about the egg, lady." I told her that the "twins" she is talking about is really rare and only like 1/24,000 ish (to share the same sac is what she thought ID meant) and slightly dangerous.. She looked sooooo dumbfounded! I bet she still thinks she is right..

Seriously.. the things I would have never known had I not going to have a set of my own... :D Just a slight goof!

Ohhhh yeah and then DH says, "our babies are a little bigger than that though" and she says.. "well actually these are exact size at 5 months" Where he replys yeah and we are 7.5 months" ADUR! He sure told her, huh? Hehehehhe!

 that is so funny i had the same thing happen to on wed at my u/s with my reg ob for anatomy. i was telling her that the peri said they had same placenta and that they were id, and she said what about the membrane (she was like i see the dividing sac) I was like OMG, i didnt want to have to give this u/s tech a lesson on twins so i just said, it depend on the placenta and one sac means momo twins and left it at that. Its was so annoying to me as well I was like duhh didnt u go to school for this stuff or do they not teach about multiples lol

There are lots of OBs that have told our members that they were having fraternal twins because there were two sacs and two placentas. And they ended up with IDs. Sounds like this is an incredibly common misconception.

so does that mean that i could be having identical twins????? i have two sacs and two placentas

It's something like a 1/3 chance that 2 sacs and 2 placentas = ID twins with same sex twins I think??? But yeah, if the egg splits early enough there will be 2 sacs and placentas.

ohhh man so i could be having identicals??? i had my first doctors check with my pregnancy when i was 8 weeks and everything was all split up so really i wont know until they are born?? is this a proven fact i thought id's shared something and had the same blood type or something like that too to prove that they are... and frat's are completely different

Yes, you could be having ID's. I just did some studying and 20-30% of identical twins have separate sacs and placentas meaning the egg split early enough after conception that the 2 zygotes are completely separate.

Hi there, even the blood type is inconclusive..if they are different then they are fraternal...if they are the same, other test have to be ran to see if they are identicle! exciting huh? We are looking forward to finding out about ours as well!

    Good luck to you!

Yep. The only way to tell is a DNA test, blood type is only a give away if they are different then they'd be FRAT.. Ours will have the same blood type cause I am O+ which is dominant, so both will be O+ too... We will just have to wait and see to...

Chances in general are 2 out of 3 are FRATS..

I secretly think ours are FRATS.. I think they looked alot differ on 4D, but who knows..

Acutally O is recessive, the only way the babies will have a O blood type is if their father is also O. There is a very neat blood typing calculator...here is the link

Blood typing and DNA....are very fascinating!

Thanks I checkout the site and found this:

A mother who is blood type O can only pass an O allele to her son or daughter.

But yes, I did see other things that said maybe the babies could be different.. I should of paid more attention in Biology :pardon:

I was told at the hospital when I had DS that all my children would be O+ because of me...

I even sent the calculator to my husband at work...I thought it was really cool....because I am A and he is AB....the babies could be A, AB, or B! it is just good to know that going in so we don't think they are giving us someone else's baby! that is scary huh?? :icon_eek:

I love it when the Medical people give us wrong information....It isn't real reassuring when they do those types of things!

I wouldn't expect a booth volunteer to know any more than the general public. I've volunteered at a booth before and the training was minimal.

I've educated quite a few people about our "implanted far apart, definitely two placentas" identical twins but it is a very, very common misconception that identicals always share a placenta. I absolutely understand how people wouldn't know when there are still TV programs, people with older twins, and a few medical professionals passing along outdated information. I'm pretty careful about how I explain things because people get offended if you bluntly tell them they're wrong and if they have twins, they may take even a very factual discussion as you telling them they don't know their own kids.

I am O and my DH is A and one of my DD's is O too. So that can't totally be right, if you are saying that the father has to be O.

If you are O and he is A....then your childs possibilities are A and O you can try out the typing calculator in the link...it is really cool...it gives you all the possibilities....everyone has 2 blood type genes...one from their mom and one from their dad.....so your husband must have an O recessive as his other type.....that can be figured out by his parents blood types.

Everyone has two blood type genes -- one from each parent -- and the dominant of the two is expressed. Your hubby's full type is AO and that expresses as type A. He passed his recessive O to your DD and you passed one of your two Os.

There's a lot more to it than that since there are 29 blood traits. That's another way to test for zygosity since the chance of a 29/29 match between non-identical siblings is tiny but with DNA testing being so affordable and not requiring a blood draw, I don't think anyone opts for blood tests anymore. Of course, the standard ABO test can rule out identicals if they're a different type but having them be the same basic type doesn't mean a whole lot (my entire family is type O).

    HTH!

ETA: looks like someone else isn't watching TV at the same time ;)

Ah Gotcha!! That stuff is all so confusing.

Actually 2 of our kids are A and one is O. Thanks that is interesting. :)
