I know I need to cut myself a break here. This is my first week of teaching ever. I had everything so planned out and organized but feel so all over the place. In just three days I already know a couple changes I'm making starting next week. For one we're going to do three days a week. DD is learning. She can tell me the letter on the card (she didn't know it on Monday) and giving the sound. She's having a blast. She's a little sponge and keeps asking for more and I didn't have anything else prepared. Ha

We are constantly changing things here. We are afforded that option by homeschooling. If something doesn't work, we can change it immediately. It's such a blessing! YAY for learning!!!

I have to ask since you use Abeka. Do you follow their plan word for word? I'm only doing the phonics portion. We've done lesson 1 & 2. Lesson 3 is kinda hard for me since we don't use desks or name tags. I'm thinking of just reviewing letter I tomorrow and being done. Also, I'm thinking about just doing it 3 days a week. Then a very quick review on tues, thurs. Do you think that's workable or do I need to stick to five days?

Completely doable! And no, I do not follow word for word. It's too much most of the time. I truly think it's written for a school program not necessarily a homeschool program. That's one of the reasons I only like it through 2nd grade. But even then some modifications are needed. It's just gives them such a solid phonics start, that I always have used it in early elementary.

The first half of the year is pretty simple. Once they start reading and writing more, you might decide to do 4 days, or maybe you'll still be flying through. It really just depends on your child and what you feel comfortable doing.

I am kicking myself for not thinking about ordering K5 numbers instead of K4! It's not enough for them. They are ready to start much more. I just had no idea that they knew as much as they did, LOL. I may decide to stop doing the K4 or fly through quickly and then order K5.

What are you using for math?

I didn't order anything but phonics. My daughter isn't ready though. I would define her as behind if you can be at this age. If I homeschool next year I'm going to get the Abeka program. I'm going to buy the whole thing. I love the Five in a Row though for this stage. It's fun to snuggle on the couch and read and then go do some fun crafts related to the book. I might end up adding in a forth or even back to five days towards the end. I can add in additional phonics and number work as we run out if five in a row books.
