    Hi there -

My husband and I are out in Denver and expecting our first children, twins, much to our surprise! We shouldn't have been surprised if we had done our homework (5 sets on his side, 4 sets on mine.) Anyway, I am looking forward to meeting you all and finding a Big Sister! I have been reading this forum for the past few days and there is a wealth of great information. I am 33 yrs old and I am 12 weeks exactly today and have been showing substantially since about 8 weeks. This is all new and strange and even though we just had an appointment and listened to the heartbeats I am still having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that there are two little ones inside. :)

Anyway, I have been lucky with mild m/s but have a question of some concern. I lost 5 lbs this trimester which I read is normal, however, I now am "hungry" all the time but have a really hard time eating. I tend to have anxiety and feel like I am not offering the babies enough to grow. Any tips for eating? The little I get down is because I just force myself, as I know I cannot not eat. I am hoping this will get better. It is the strangest sensation. The minute I start biting into food I can hardly swallow it. Now I am starting to get a constant headache and I just want to lay down all the time. I know this is not the way to be growing two babies - but it has not been easy to force food down even though my mind says I should just be able to do that. I was wandering if anyone has faced similar experiences around this time and if there was a good tip of how to handle it?

    thanks so much,
    Betsy

    WECOME TO TS!!!! & CONGRATS!!!!

I had some experience with this type of thing during ALL of my 1st tri and some of my 2nd. I would start to eat something, Maybe get 3-4 Bites down, and then I would have another in my mouth, and I would literally have to spit it out, I couldn't swallow it for the life of me! And if I did, I would get SICK! Finally around the 14th week everything started getting a lot better, but I lost 33lbs from not being able to keep much down. Doctor wasn't worried; I didn't start out my pregnancy on the small side! I can tell you a few things that helped me, I would drink instant breakfast if I wasn't able to keep a lot down, or eat enough; to help substitute what I was missing. When I did eat, I made the foods count, healthy, organic and whole foods. No junk! At this stage the babies, if they aren't getting what they need from what your eating they will get it from your body.(IE: Fat stores, ect)

I hope you feel better soon! Again, CONGRATS!!!

:welcome: Hi and congratulations on your bubies Im sorry I cant help you with your problem although I have morning sickness every time I can eat alot when Im not being sick! Maybe you could keep some fresh cut fruit on the bench and just have a bite each time you walk past. The babies will take every thing they need from your body but you still need to take care of yourself! Good luck.

Betsy, congratulations to you and your DH on your little bundles! You should be happy to know that you are normal! :good: I lost 14 pounds in my first trimester and hardly ate anything! Nothing sounded good and when I could come up with something I wanted, DH would rush out to get it for me to eat 2 bites and then turn my nose up at it. As PP said, and my peri explained, the babies will get what they need from you. The most important thing is to eat what you think you can keep down. Around 20 weeks (as explained by my doc) is when my actual diet will become more important to them. Just make sure you try and make smart food choices when you can. Apples and grapes were great for me as well as cheese and mashed potatoes. A lot of ladies like the protein shakes, so those might be a good choice too. I read somewhere that if you want an ice cream treat, that malts are the best thing (nutritionally) for us pregnant ladies.

Hang in there, it does get better! I literally threw up every day for months. Mine subsided at week 14, got worse at 16 and then went away not to be seen again since then and I'll be 20 weeks on Thursday. It's all about the hormones!

Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions. I'm just a couple months ahead of you so your concerns are probably things that are fresh on my mind (and I ask a lot of questions!).

Hi Betsy! Congrats on your twins and welcome to TS!!

If solid food don't agree with you, which is the case when you have m/s, try nourishing fluids such as shakes, Ensure plus, Boost drinks, protein shakes, milk, yogurt, etc.

Small snacks throughout the day also helps, so pack your kitchen with all those nice snacks tips the pp mentioned. Cheese sticks worked well for me, and I take protein bar too on some days when I feel like I can manage. One craving I had was peanut butter, which I scoop it onto teaspoonful and chill it, so its all nice and cold when I feel like one.

Remember to drink enough fluids too, if inadequate, you can get headache easily. Heard it can cause cramps too, not too sure about that though.

Hope you'll feel better soon!!!

p/s: Don't worry about the weight loss just yet, most of us lost weight during the first trimester, I didn't start to gain till 4 weeks ago! Like the pp said, the babies will know how to get what they need from our stores! :D

Welcome! I also live in Denver (west denver) and can help you a ton!

Mostly, just eat anything you can - if that means shakes all the time, go for it!

PM me anytime and I'll give you my email, we can talk that way too, about local stuff.

HI!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! and welcome to the TS family!!!!

I relied on Boost shakes - there were times although I didn't have the morning sickness problem w/ the twins that eating was just not what I felt like doing! I had bad food adversions with the girls - I would think I wanted to eat something, start off thinking that it was the best thing EVER and the perfect food!! But by bite #4 or so YUK YUK YUK!!!!!!

    :welcome: Betsy!

    Congrats on your babies!

What you described is quite common. I had migranes for over half the pregnancy and was in bed (from the headaches) for about 3 months. Eating is essential and something you must do and an help with the headaches too.

Drinking lots of water can help the headachess too. The thing I tried to remember was that I never atre empty calories. everything that went in my mouth was high in protein and other good stuff since I was not able to eat very much in the beginning. that will change though.

Congratulations and welcome to TS!:Clap:

I was lucky enough not to get m/s with my twin pregnancy but what you are describing is perfectly normal. There are many women who lost weight that first trimester due to m/s and the babies were fine. They'll get what they need even if they have to pull it from your body. Just eat what you can, focus on protein and water, and get enough sleep. Once the m/s goes down some, you can start giving your body more.

I also drank those carnation instant breakfast shakes which made me feel better when I didn't feel as though I was getting enough nutrition.
Just do your best & the babies will get what they need :good:

    welcome and congrats!

I lost a ton of weight in the first trimester because of severe morning sickness. I didn't feel GOOD enough to start eating well until around 20 weeks and I managed to pack on 40 lbs! Just try to make the healthiest options when eating! I drank a carnation instant breakfast (couldn't stomach the Ensure) and ate as much healthy fats and proteins as I could.

    Good luck!
