I am really trying to not be an obsessive, over-protective parent (it's just my personality).

The boys are 7mths and going to my sisters pool for the first time....should I be worried about the chlorine?? Any precautions I should take? (I'll rinse them down after)

But what about eyes, hands in mouth etc...

the boys love water and are always trying to stick their head under in the bath (yes, I have weird kids) haha

We live where there are many lakes and ponds, so a pool is a rare treat (at least for me, I hate "black" water) haha

    thanks guys!

We just took our girls to the pool for the first time last week--they had a swim lesson (well, really, just the lifeguard letting us know answers to some of the questions you have and showing us how to "play" with our girls in the water in a class format). Our instructor said that even at 5 months, we can "dunk" them as long as we "scoop" them through the water head first--we didn't do that this time, but will try next time. She said that babies natural instinct is to hold their breath.

The chlorine didn't seem to bother our babies eyes--they naturally will "blink" out the water. T ended up sticking her face in the water several times and seemed to enjoy it. If they swallow some of the pool water, it's not harmful, but they may spit up a little bit (that's what T did). My biggest issue was that I didn't want them to get chilled afterwards (the pool was indoors) so I made sure to have 2 big beach towels handy and I waited until I got home to bathe them (not sure how they would have felt about a shower).

    Have fun! :)

Hmmm... we haven't tried chlorine yet. We go to a pool (it's public) that uses saline and is 92 degrees (aaaah! very nice) and I usually rinse them off afterwards. We've dunked them a few times and they haven't had any eye issues and I'm not too worried about the water in their mouth. Chlorine pools will be in our future though so I'm curious to hear how your experience is. I bet it will be fine though... have fun!

We started swimming lessons at 6 months and I just rinsed them off afterwards. They got splashed quite a bit in their eyes as well and it didn't seem to bother them. Have fun!!!

My boys love the pool and we have never had any problems with the chlorine. If you have blond kids, chlorine can make their hair turn green, but if I remember correctly from my sister, it takes weeks of chlorine exposure. My boys don't even get rinsed off after the pool. They just get a bath that night. My DH swims daily and needs lotion now, so maybe a good rub down of lotion after a bath would prevent any dry skin.

We recently started taking our babies swimming (they are now 5 months) and they love it mostly. The chlorine hasn't seemed to bother them one bit. It's the sun we worry about so we make sure they have plenty of sunscreen and we make sure they get plenty of shade while not in the pool, they also wear a had most of the time, but not always.

Last summer, when our kiddos were 6 months old, we would take them in our pool in the backyard, they did not have problems skin wise afterwards with the chlorine. We would just pull them around on floats and they would sit there and look around. We put sunglasses (the wrap around kind) and hats on them (in addition to sunscreen) and let them dry off and give them a bath that night. Good luck!!! I hope you all have fun in the pool!
