First finger foods?

    Hello all,

My eight month old daughters seem really interested in watching me eat and make little chewing motions and even drool when they watch my husband and I at the table. They eat one meal of "solid" food a day, usually some sort of vegetable or fruit puree and do ok with texture. Actually, one does great, the other gags from time to time. I would like to introduce some finger foods but am at a loss as to where to start.

I don't want to try Gerber Puffs (they have some ingredients I don't want to give the girls) and am not a fan of the mesh feeders. So... what I'm wondering is whether anyone out there has skipped puffs and mesh feeders... and if so, what first finger foods do you recommend?

    Thanks!

We did very small cut up bananas last night. They had fun with it.

Well we did puffs first, as they dissolve very very easily. But if you don't want to do those, you could try half cheerios, small pieces of banana, cooked carrots, small pieces of bread, anything that is soft.

I was also going to say Cheerios. Or what about avocado? That's another good one. Bananas are definitely a good beginning food too.

When I discovered that mine hated purees, we went straight to finger foods, and gave them pieces of stuff too big to choke on, so they could gum off little bites - apple slices, avocado slices, big chunks of banana, toast... Finger food doesn't have to be itty bitty!

Cheerios broken in half (and maybe soaked in some bm or formula), small pieces of banana or avocado (although these are slippery and maybe hard for them to get into their hands and then to their mouths), diced up potato or sweet potato...

cheerios, scrambled egg yokes, shredded cheese and puffs are what we started with. But if you dont want puffs, i'm sure the other foods would do just fine.

I'm at the point now where they get little pieces of almost everything we eat!
