Well I finally did it. I took the kids in to a pediatric dentist and they did GREAT! No fussing or crying. They let the dr check out their teeth and scrape around in their mouths without complaint. Here is my problem. He told me he would like to put sealants on Audreys Molars because the grooves are really deep. When I asked about the procedure he said they would have to sedate her!!! I got a bit nervous about that. Have any of you had children sedated by Nitrous Oxide ( laughing gas )? Did they have any side effects from it? Her appointment is on tues. and I'm thinking of canceling it. ANY advice would be VERY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Over the summer, right before dd1's fifth birthday she needed a cavity filled and they used nitrious oxide. She was a little goofy while she was having the procedure done, but by the time she got back to me, she was perfectly fine. We went and had breakfast and carried on with our day.

we're having the nitrous on Jorja in November, so we'll see how it goes for a cavity and seal

Berkley's had it twice now for the saem reason, to put sealants on.
The first time she didn't do well so we cancelled the appt, it wasn't her reaction to having it, it was her reaction to them getting anywhere near her head w/ it!LOL!
We came back and they gave her something to relax her and that worked, they were able to give her the nitrous oxide that time.
She LOVED it scarily enough! LOL!
She did it again w/ no problems after that!

I would check this out more if you can. I recently saw something on TV discussing this and the fact that it can be dangerous. If I can find the article, I'll link it. I myself as a child had a bad reaction to this gas.

My whole family seems to react badly to it, so I wouldn't want it for my kids. When I had it myself I felt like the room was spinning, going dark & even though they told me I wasn't, I felt like my whole body was shaking uncontrollably. It really scared me. Then, 2 of my brothers threw up from having it. I think it's more of a family tendancy, though, to be sensitive to drugs.

I would just research it & find out as much as you can.....maybe get a 2nd opinion from another dentist office & see if they sedate for sealants.

Can they try it without sedation? I've done sealants on some 3 & 4 year old that did fine with no sedation. Maybe you can ask if they can try no sedation first.

Thank you all so much for your responses. I ended up cancelling her appointment for tomorrow because I just did not feel comfortable with the fact that they insist on using it on her. She honestly did just fine while he was checking and scraping around in her mouth. I don't see why she would need it for sealants. I will be checking around with other dentists. Thanks again everyone. :wavey:
