My girls first birthday is coming up and I really don't want to give them the traditional sugar filled cake and icing. Does anyone have a healthier cake recipe that would be easy to make as an alternative?

Great question- I am interested in this, too.
I wonder if replacing the sugar with Splenda is enough.
    Maybe a carrot cake?

Here is one recipe, and there are a few on the same site. If you go to the Wholesome Baby Food website, go down to the left corner, there is a Google search, click the button that says wholesome baby food, type in cake, and you will find quite a few recipes! [IMG]I LOVE that website!!!

I don't know if I'd give Splenda to a baby, you might be better off giving them the sugar than doing that. At least the sugar is natural [IMG] If it's only for a special occasion I don't think it's such a big deal.

I'm of this mindset too!! They actually eat VERY little of it usually. I gave my guys cupcakes so that the amt. they had was limited and not a FULL cake. Of the full cakes I have seen, they don't eat much....

It's entirely up to you, obviously! Have fun with it!!

I've moved this thread to the COOKING forum and then I Shortcut it back to the FY....FYI.

I'm in the same mindset as well. And, I also agree with Diane - they wear more than they eat [IMG] Cupcakes are a great idea to limit the amount! You can also make any box cake with just a can of soda instead of the oil, water & eggs. It would cut down on the fat, but certainly not the sugar.

You know, I did give them a healthy cake for their first birthday, but if I had it all to do again I probably wouldn't (I've loosened up on the sugar thing and now have the same mindset as others -- let them have some on special occasions). But if you must, the one I used I found in the recipe section of "What to Expect During the First Year" if you have it. It's something like Best-Bets Birthday cake or something. A carrot based cake.

My mil used pudding instead of frosting with her kids. I liked the idea and did the same
Also suggested an angel cake....I guess less sugar but I have not compared the two myself

I've been wondering this too...we've been so paranoid up to this point about giving single-ingredient foods and all of a sudden it's okay to throw a full cake with frosting in front of them?

Strangely, I have never thought about this til the twins came along??? HAHAHA!! The wholesomebabyfood.com website has some really great, healthy recipes! I think I might try one when the twins turn one!! I have given all of my other kids the standard, dive in, free birthday cake with no adverse reactions by the way! Well except for the big mess! One thing to consider is whether you want eggs in the cake or not since your twins probably haven't had them (they aren't allowed before age 1). With my first, I went ahead and gave her the regular cake with eggs and had no trouble. But I would imagine that an allergic reaction is a bad thing on a first birthday. I don't have a recipe for egg-free cake, but I'll bet you could do a Google search for one.

Thanks so much for all of the responses. I did find a recipe that actually used baby food. It has eggs and sugar in it, but I agree with the other responses--they aren't going to consume that much. Here is the link to the recipe I found. If you search the allrecipes website there are a couple of other versions of this.

    Thanks again
