We always make chocolate cakes for everybody's birthday. We're just a chocolate lovin' family. Anyway, I was planning to make chocolate for the girls' first birthday and my mom asked if it is o.k. for them to have chocolate. Hmmmm...I hadn't thought of that. I've thought about all the sugar and the eggs that they've never had, but that's in every cake. I imagine they won't eat much of it anyway...just make a huge mess with it. Has anyone else made a chocolate cake for the first birthday?

Sure - lots of people make chocolate cakes for first birthdays. If there are several ingredients your girls haven't yet had, how about giving them individually in the week or two before the party? You could do scrambled eggs one day and a small bite of chocolate several days later? That way your girls will have passed the allergy test on all of the ingredients before you make the cake.

I did chocolate for my other kids, and I never noticed any problems. I had an aunt to tell me that the taste of chocolate was too sophisticated for that age group, haha! The thing I would now fear in giving it to them is that they might develop a chocolate addiction (haha!). . . or make a bigger mess.

It's tradition in my family to have a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting for 1st birthdays, the babies loved it!

Half of our cake was chocolate and the other half was vanilla. It was a big hit! GL with your decision.

I'm not doing chocolate. I think it's too young. I guess do what you're comfortable with!

I think they say chocolate is fine at one year ... I didn't even know there was any sort of issue around it ... Go for it! The kids will LOVE it I'm sure!

We did chocolate for my twins' first birthday. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship between them and chocolate. :D

I can understand if people want to avoid all sweets or have specific allergy worries, but assuming that's not the case, I can't see how chocolate is any riskier than white cake or vanilla or whatever.

If they dont have any food allergies then I think chocolate would be fine.

I personally did not do chocolate. I thought it might be too sweet for them since they hadnt been exposed to anything like that. In the end, it didnt matter-they didnt eat any of it anyway.

We did chocolate for my daughters 1st birthday. She loved it!
I will probably do 2 cakes for the boys - one chocolate and one vanilla...or half and half.

I know many moms do serve chocolate. Personally, I'm not serving chocolate and I'm doing whole grain flour, less sugar (maybe none). I still want it to be as healthy as possible- but I'm a freak ;)

I always make white because that is what I like ;) I've never liked chocolate cake which is really weird since I am a chocoholic!!

I don't think the cake matters so much when you consider all the sugar in the frosting  All of mine have eaten a lot more of the frosting than the cake anyway.

GL with your decision and don't forget to post pics for us afterward!!
