we don't have one either... we didn't use our fireplace much since the kids have been born. but in the summer they were enthralled with it. I finally just backed a couch up to it for several months. they finally started ignoring it.

I have seen pictures of the metal superyard being attached to the walls around the fireplace with the gate in the middle. (of course I forgot this and just sold my metal superyard.. that would have been perfect for next winter!)

not sure if you were looking for a more permanent fireplace solution with doors etc. I'll be interested on other people's ideas.

We have a gas fireplace that is way too easily accesible....to the point one of the girls touched it this winter and burned her lil fingers. So that is when we knew we had to get something. We just went to lowes and found a metal fire screen and put it up. They were pretty interested in it at first but the novelty wore off after a week or so and they never really got close to it again. If we turn the fireplace on now they will just stand back and look at it and tell me over and over again HOT.

We don't use ours and it has a glass cover over it. The only issue we ever had was Jacob pounding on the glass a little harder than I expected a toddler could. We redirected him a few times and now he ignores the fire place. If you never use it, I suggest putting something temporary (table, sofa) until they lose the allure for it.
