So, my fingers have been very swollen for quite sometime. I have not been able to wear my wedding ring for at least the last month. The last week or so, when I wake up in the middle of the night my fingers hurt SO bad like I can barely move them but then when I wake up in the morning they feel fine. Has anyone else experienced this?

My hands and fingers dont really look too swollen, just not as veiny as they usually are, but I have not been able to crack my knuckles for a few days and the joints are sore.

My fingers kind of go in waves, but often at night they are worse. I think I lie on my arm or hand when I sleep and wake up with swollen hands. I wonder if that's part of it...are you lying on your hand/arm while you sleep? Try to pay attention to when they swell.

my wedding rings swtich from my pinky to my ring finger and back depending on the day. I cut back on salt and sugar and it seems to be getting better. If it gets really bad I would call the Dr., there are medications and other measures they can take that will relieve the pain and swelling.

I have just started experiencing this. They have been swollen, but are just now starting to hurt, at night I can't even ball my hand into a knuckle.

OMG! Do I EVER have this feeling.

I do wake up with my hand under my pillow. I try consciously to have it raised above my pillow (to drain to heart) when I fall asleep, but it's hard to break habits.

It went from swelling months ago, to finger joint pain... (not being able to make a fist) first thing in the morning. Now my pain radiates in my wrist as well, and is stronger when I try to move my thumb?!?! Oh, and doesn't really go away fully ALL DAY.

If I nap, it's the same. DH tries to help me out of bed, but I can't grasp his hands, so we loop elbows, or he just grabs me.

I cannot wait for this symptom to go away!! It is so painful since we use them everyday. I'm starting to think I wont be able to hold my babies if it continues like this much past their births... :(

I just want to chime in a little; please be wary if you swell up suddenly to the point of pain. Call your doctors as this may be a sign of pre-eclampsia which can be very serious.

I had to take my rings off at around 28 wks and every week after the babies were born I tried to put them back on; finally could around 12 wks after birth. That was such a happy day for me!

I couldnt wear my ring for the last half of my pregnancy, and I had carpal tunnel, I would wake up in the middle of the night with my fingers in HORRIBLE pain, and sometimes totally numb, it was scary! I would call your doc and ask though, just to make sure it isn't pre-E like the pp stated.

I'm having the same issue, although not swelling, I just feel like I am eight-eight with arthritis in my hands. But in the morning it is gone...odd:)

My DD experienced severe carpal tunnel in both hands when she was about seven months pregnant. Her hands did not swell too badly but the numbness and pain were awful.

Her doctor told her it would improve after delivery but it took quite some time. The four days in the hospital after delivery she didn't have any strength in her hands at all, and for the first 6-8 weeks after the babies came home it was still pretty bad. There were times she could not hold the boys at all because she had no feeling in her hands. The feeling that her hands were "going to sleep" was so frustrating and at times downright painful for her.

The boys are now six months old and she still experiences this on a fairly regular basis, especially when she is doing tasks that take finer motor skills like holding a baby spoon, etc., but fortunately it is much improved. Hopefully time will resolve this completely for her.

I don't mean for this to scare you! DD's doctor told her that he had not seen pregnancy-induced CT continue to this degree so it's not common. Hope your swelling and discomfort is able to be controlled. Have you tried putting ice packs on your hands? DD said this did help her somewhat.

    Best wishes!

 Hi everyone!! I do more reading and soaking up info than posting, but I had to comment on this. I have been suffering for the past few weeks and it feels like its getting worse. Almost to tears and it happens in the middle of the night and somewhat goes away in the morning. I love this site because it is so helpful and informative I dont feel like Im the only one!!!

I am suffering from both carpal tunnel and the swelling. The two combined can be so terrible at times that I just want to cry. I worry about it not going away after pregnancy, but know that I will pursue tx then (surgery) if all else fails. My career depends on it.

I haven't had tactile feeling in my first three fingers in at least two months. I so hope that it goes away so that I can feel my sweet babies when they're here.

All that said, this is what I've been doing that helps. Every night I fill the bathroom sink with two BIG cups of ice (like a big gulp size) and cold water. Then I soak them for 60-120 seconds to start with intervals of holding them over my head for 5-10 min (on the back of the couch, etc), for an hour or so. Then I try to hold them in the ice water for longer right before I go to bed. I also wear a brace on my right hand/wrist (it's the worst) so that I don't fold my wrist at night. Finally, I have pillows stacked to put my arms/hands on when I sleep and do my best to keep them there although it's not foolproof.

I wake up in a lot of pain at times. I keep an ice pack in the fridge for that purpose to help get back to sleep. Shaking them helps too to get circulation going again.

I hope this helps someone out there that is suffering like me. I have seen three docs and a chiropractor trying to find a solutions, but in the end the only thing I can really do is to wait until the babies are born.

I had horrible carpal tunnel w/DS and I saw a hand doctor this past year(not for the same thing). But when he injected me with a numbing agent into that area I got it again and he prescribed a wrist splint.
He did say that people who get it while they're pregnant tend to eventually get it later in life. Not trying to scare anyone, just so you know.
Luckily enough, I haven't had much yet with this one. Not sure why, w/DS it was earlier than this. Hope you all get some relief. And ask your doc about it because he can prescribe the splints for you. And I really hope it doesn't come back or stay with you afterwards.

I don't have the carpal tunnel but I do have the feeling like I have fingers of an 80 year old. It is hard to make a fist and eventhough my fingers don't "look" swollen they feel painful and ache. It feels like what arthritis would feel like.

    any suggestions anyone ?????
