What finger foods did you start with? Mine only feed themselves teething biscuits so far but we were late with the solids because of adjusted ages. I will get some of those puffs this weekend, but what homemade foods do you cook them so they can feed themselves

These are some if the things the girls really like: fruit, veggies, baked tofu, noddles, ravioli, toast with apple butter, pancakes, waffels, french toast, mac & cheese, sometimes I give them jello gigglers for a snack. Whatever I can think of, I like to try different thing. My girls don't like me to feed them anymore so I'm always trying different things they can pick up.

At that age about the only thing I gave mine as far as finger foods were teething biscuits as well. I tried puffs but they got chocked on them easily. Mine didn't have any teeth until after a year of age, so we did SOFT foods.

Thanks for the suggestions. But I forgot to ask do you cut it up very small? How do you prevent choking? Thanks

I would add puffs, cheerios, we first started cutting them both in half to begin with. Anything soft, banana, and pp's gave other good suggestions.

Yes, cut everything is very small pieces.

I do cut things that are to big. I started giving my gilrs puffs at 6 months and they did real good at chewing. Now they don't choke or gag to often, they are totally off of babyfood. I know it a little soon but I'm going with their lead. I would see how your babies do with the puffs and go from there. Good luck

I'm paranoid about choking, so I cut almost everything. But some things my babies have liked are:

    cheerios
    avacado
    cheese
noodles (the shell kind are perfect!)
canned mandarin oranges (I cut these up, too)
    low-sodium crackers
    peaches

Here is part of a feeding guide found at this website.

    quote:
    Age: 8 to 10 months

    What to feed
    • Breast milk or formula, PLUS
    • Small amounts of soft pasteurized cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese (but no cows' milk until age 1)
    • Iron-fortified cereals (rice, barley, wheat, oats, mixed cereals)
    • Mashed fruits and vegetables (bananas, peaches, pears, avocados, cooked carrots, squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes)
    • Finger foods (lightly toasted bagels, cut up; small pieces of ripe banana; well-cooked spiral pasta; teething crackers; low-sugar O-shaped cereal)
    • Small amounts of protein (egg yolk, pureed meats and poultry; tofu; well-cooked and mashed beans with soft skins like lentils, split peas, pintos, black beans)
    • Non-citrus juice (apple or pear)

    How much per day
    • ¼ to 1/3 cup dairy (or ½ oz. cheese)
    • ¼ to ½ cup iron-fortified cereal
    • ¼ to ½ cup fruit
    • ¼ to ½ cup vegetables
    • 1/8 to ¼ cup protein foods
    • 3 to 4 oz. non-citrus juices

Hope that helps a little! [IMG]

I've found that with mine (9 months) I either have to give them finger foods that are small enough for choking not to be a hazard - puffs, cheerios, peas, cut up soft fruit and veggies etc - or too big so that they can gnaw on them - a stick of toast, teething biscuit, mum-mums. I was a lot more cautious with my older daughter. I find that I pretty much give these two anything within reason and watch to see how they handle it.
