I started around 7 months, since my babies hated spoon-feeding. If they have the hand skills to pick something up, they have the mouth skills to eat it safely (supervised, of course). You don't even need to cut stuff into itty bitty pieces - I just give mine slices of toast (and other stuff) too BIG to choke on, and they gum/bite off appropriate pieces.

Have fun! It's so nice when they can finger feed themselves! (And SO totally sweet when they start trying to "feed" you their cheerios or whatever! )

I think we started around 8mo, with banana puffs, we then moved on to cheerios and saltines since puffs seem like junk food and I was having to try to keep DD out of them too. Now I have been giving them diced fruit and veggies with each pureed baby food meal too and they love it.

We probably started just before 9 months. I can't quite remember. (amazing how that happens).

Now at 10 months - they get, puffs, cherios, toast, as snacks.

And for meals for finger foods - they get steamed veggies and fruits and turkey, chicken, ham, scrambled egg yolks, wholewheat pasta, avocado, bananas.

I give them chunky purees as the filler - just to make sure they get enough. And we are having cream cheese & yogurt now as well.

Its amazing how fast they progress. I was terrified at first but I just took it slow and made sure the pieces were small enough.

My peditrician said we could start with wagon wheels at their 6 month appointment. The kids seem to do okay with them-he said they were less messy than the bitterbites-but that those would be OK too. Around 9 mnths he said we'd do cherrio type stuff, as they'd developed their pincher grasp then.

We started with Puffs just after 7 months and Cheerios a little while after that.

We started puffs around 8.5 months and then cheerios (half cheerios that is) about a month later. But my oldest DD started them at 7 months.
