My girls are about 6.5 months old. We stared cereal around 4.5 months and just before 6 months we moved on to the traditional level 1 foods (carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, etc). They really seem to have an interest in our food and wanting to put things in their mouths. I keep hearing about puffs...is it too early to start them on these? What about other finger foods? (my girls do not have any teeth as of yet). How did you introduce finger foods to your babies (what and when)? We have an appt with our ped this week and I was planning on asking her advice but was curious what everyone else has done. In the what to expect the first year book it said that by the end of the 7th month they will probably be able to eat a cracker but was specific in not just any cracker but I think it mentioned whole wheat (I read it late last night and was exhausted so I need to go back and reread.

Mine are 8 months and we still haven't started. I did try puffs a few weeks ago and they kind of gagged on them so I decided to hold off on those. We will probably try them again soon.

Mine are 6 months as well. They seem very interested in our food as well. I did buy the puffs and give them a couple before their 11 am and 2pm feedings. Right now my daughter will place a puff in her mouth, let it hang on her tongue and then spit it out. My son tosses them on the floor. I'm not sure that they are ready for it yet but I figure it is good to introduce them to a different texture

    Hey,
I offer my babies puffs everyday. Break them in half until they keep them in their mouth long enough to dissolve.
    This is what I do:
After I feed the babies their solids and they are in their high chairs I put like 6 puffs on their tray. for DD I break them in half cause she gags but for DS I leave them whole. I do this just to let them practice. They are both aware it is food and that it goes in their mouths. Occasionally it will end up in their mouths...but they do try, which is the important part.

During this time, I go and draw their bath water...So it gives them a minute to stimulate their hand/eye coordination.
I NEVER put the puffs on the tray WHILE I'm feeding them though because it distracts them like crazy... I have made the mistake before!

I don't know anything about finger foods though, I haven't really thought of it because I figured they were not only too young but they can't seem to get much of anything in their mouth.
I heard you know they are ready when they can hold things between their thumbs and their pointing finger...Which mine are not at yet...

My boys started eating puffs and cheerios about a 2 wks ago...so around 7 mths. They love them! They don't have the ability to put them in their mouths themselves yet. They can pick them up but can't seem to let them go into their own mouths so I put them in their mouths and they open their mouths like little birdies when they want more.

We started puffs and biter biscuits at 6 months adjusted. They both do fine with them, and I am just sure to keep my eyes on them. My girls absolutely LOVE them!

I've never given my babies puffs but I do give them teething biscuits and toast. I just haven't ever picked up the puffs while at the grocery store, if someone had a puff and offered it to me they could eat it! I started with the biscuits at 7 or 8 months. We don't eat table foods yet, only baby food.
