We are getting ready to start baby food and I have a question about scheduling... I have to leave my house at 6:30 AM with the babies to take them to daycare and get to work on time. Should I try getting them fed before we leave or just let the daycare feed them? These are our first children so sometimes I feel like I have no clue what I'm doing! They are gaining weight and the ped says they are doing great so we must be doing something right!

We're just starting daycare, but we've been doing solids for several weeks. I plan to have daycare feed solids, but never anything new. We'll start new foods on the weekends when I can feed them.

They get up about 5:30 and my husband feeds them while I get ready, he's great! :D

    How old are your babies?

Just wondering if you can delay solids a bit longer so you dont have to deal with it right now. But if you cant, what about doing their first meal in the evenings that way you can do it and have fun with it. When mine were just starting I did not do it everyday and I only fed one of the boys at a time. I was not consistent with it until they were better at eating off the spoon and not spitting it out. Then once they get more proficient maybe have daycare feed them lunch and leave breakfast as the last meal to add in since you have to leave so early. A plus to doing it that way is that by the time you want to add in breakfast it could be finger foods so that they can feed themselves while you get ready for work in front of them.

Thanks, that sounds like a really good idea. They are 6 months and one week old. (a little over 3 adjusted age) Our pedi didn't seem like it was a big deal that we had not started yet and I have read in several places that a lot of term babies don't start until 6 months, but the pedi says it's ok now. I think we are going to take it pretty slow at first and let them get used to the idea. I had actually decided that we would do the first feeding at home. I thought about doing a supper time feeding this week and this weekend add in lunch to see how they do before asking daycare to do lunch.
    Thanks again for the suggestion

I agree with Rachel...especially now that i see that your babies are only a little over 3 months adjusted. I would just do it on weekends or at supper, if at all. This is just for practice right now. In a few months, when they are better at it, then I would have daycare do it.

    Good luck!

We did the first meal as dinner until they were eating well. It also let me be the one to start new foods. Once they were eating a variety of the stage 1 foods I asked daycare to feed them once mid morning.

I agree with pp's. Since its just for practice you don't have to do it every day. I would do it at a convenient time for you when you or your DH can do it. When we started solids, we did it between the 4 and 8 pm bottles around 6pm after coming home from daycare or the sitter's house. GL and have the camera handy!!!

Ours are in daycare as well, and we do our solids meal in the evening. It makes the evenings a little chaotic (and packed with food); but I can't imagine trying to do a solids meal in the morning. Getting the bottles in is tough enough.

Plus, it's going to take a while to get them up to speed on the solids; and you don't want to be doing that when you are super pressed for time. It should be fun at this point since it's just for practice, not stressful.

    Good luck!

We tried feeding them ourselves in the morning and then we tried in the evening, and in the end we let daycare do it.

We didn't start doing breakfast until they were eating on their own. Now daycare does a "snack" time around 8:30 am (they have bottles at home at 7) and they get cereal (kix), fruit, and cheese.

By six months of age, my DS was hungrier for more than just his bottle and daycare asked to give him lunch. We went with it and it has worked out great. They got just lunch and dinner until they were 9 months a few weeks ago.

    HTH! GL!

Since you are just getting ready to start baby food, wait until the evenings to do it. Once they're doing well with that, add lunch at daycare. Then, you can add breakfast last. That will give the kids time to adapt to the new foods and way of eating and then it won't be such a hassle when you try to feed them in the morning. It'll also give you a couple of months to consider how you want to schedule it.
