OK. So we have done sweet potatoes and last night we started peas. Those seemed to go over pretty well. The sweet potatoes were a hit also. My question is this-when did you start fruit? After you went through all the veggies? My one son has issues going to the bathroom since starting cereal. I've done the apple/prune juice bit-and that ends up coming back up(he's my happy spitter!). I am hoping fruit would help make him a bit more consistent. I did add some prunes to the mix last night-just a little-in hopes of helping him...

So-along with that question comes-when did you start a 2nd meal? Lord help me when that time comes. I don't know how I will do it! We are not on a set feeding schedule-and I think that is where my problem lies. They eat between 7-8am(always fluctuates) and then roughly between 11-12, 3-4, and then 6-7 is the last bottle-on a good night. Last night it wasn't till 8:30pm they were getting their bottle. We try to do the solids around 5:45/6-all depending on when that last bottle just was. I just can't seem to figure it out!

The pedi said feeding solids was an art. Have I mentioned I don't like art?? :p

Our pedi suggested doing all orange veggies first, then green, then fruit. So thats what we did. As for starting a second meal, that didn't happen until about 7 or 8 months. I really took my time with solids though.

I am probably going to catch some **** for this but oh well.
I started with prunes per the pedi because one of my girls got bound up from the rice. I switched to oatmeal first. They were getting cereal about a week before their 4mo bday because of reflux and they were not taking bottles. At the 4mo appt she told me I could add breakfast since they love solids and it was helping with the puking.

My girls get 2tsp of oatmeal mixed with fruit for breakfast, 2tbsp of oatmeal mixed with veggies for dinner and prunes for 'dessert'. I give them a couple of spoonfuls of prunes mixed with bm to thin it out a little.
They nurse, nap #3, dinner, bath, nurse, bed.

    Good luck!!

My pedi said we could mix introducing fruits and veggies ... so we would do a veggie one day, a fruit 3-4 days later, etc. My kids liked everything, so I never had to deal with them rejecting Green Beans because they already had fruits and liked those better. But I do know a lot of people who did veggies first and then fruits.

We went to 2 meals at 6 months. Our schedule was 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm bottles ... first meal we added was at 5pm of solids ... and then we added the 2nd meal at like 9am ... the day care was doing that meal for us. I just remember thinking "I thought it would get a bit easier as they get older" but it seemed then instead of 4 feedings a day, now I was up to six! ugh! It's definitely an art trying to figure out when to do it, and how much and all that. It's a pain in the butt too! Take your time and you will figure it out ... I didn't rush them to add other meals. Some people I know also did bottles and solids at the same time, so that you weren't feeding so often during the day. That just never worked for us. Try and keep an open mind, and keep playing with your schedule until you find one that works for you and the kids!

    Good luck!

I mixed and matched...did a fruit for 3 days, did a veggie for 3, etc. Watch out for bananas and sweet potatoes though...they tend to be binding. My boys started getting more regular when we switched to baby oatmeal...which they much preferred over the rice cereal anyway.

We started some rice cereal around 4 months, started adding in fruits/veggies around 5 months (around 5.5 months we started oatmeal) and around the 6-6.5 month we added in breakfast as our second meal (wanted to make sure they were really getting dinner down pat first). We added lunch as our third meal at 8 months.

I also did bottles before solids...at that age formula and bm are more important and mine wouldn't drink near as much nor eat as much if they didn't have the bottle first. That's what we did.

    Hi Meg!

funny how pedis all give such different advice. Mine said fruits before veggies. We started with rice cereal. Then added in some bites of mashed up avocado. Then banana a few days after that. Then Danny was so constipated that we switched to oatmeal cereal, they like it way better than the rice anyway. And we cut out the banana. and added in prunes and pears. So typical dinner now is bowl of oatmeal cereal, and a separate bowl with a little prunes and a little pears, not really mixed, just together in the bowl. Last night I mixed a little mashed banana in with Callie's cereal. I gave danny a few bites of carrotts and a bite of peas last week just because we were with my sister and she was feeding it to her baby so I thought I'd see how he liked it. But we haven't really started veggies yet. I was thinking maybe this weekend I would cook up some sweet potatoes and try that.

We also just added a second meal. We've been doing dinner time. Just this week I'm also having the nanny do a mid day meal. Once we start veggies we might do cereal + veggies for one meal and cereal + fruit for the other meal. we'll see.

Hi Lisa! Thanks for the input. OK. So I think I will wait until 6 months to go to two meals. No rush over here. Let them get the hang of it first, right? As for pedi's-yes it is amazing how they all give difference advice. Mine does not believe in CIO, and says they do need to eat in the middle of the night(no big deal). Whereas others believe in CIO, and some say they don't need to eat at night past 12 weeks. Go figure! As for fruits vs veggies...he said veggies first because of the sweetness of the fruit-they may not like the veggies. I think that's what my mom did to me!

I wanted to mention you are my blogger hero! LOL! I love reading your blog and looking at how big Callie and Daniel are getting! They are just gorgeous babies! And your sister was a beautiful bride! I will have to ask you for travel tips for when we take the boys to Italy this summer to meet family(they will be 9 months old...). BTW-How did they like the avocado? You didn't have to puree it or anything? Just mashed it up? I might have to try that...
