Fever and sun exposure?

I was out today all day, so dh was home with the three kids. They spent a lot of time outside because dh is doing some work on the playground area. Today, the high was around 84/85. Our yard is pretty sunny, but there are some great areas of shade. He had plenty of water outside for them, chairs for them to sit in, and they had quite a few freeze pops!

All three kids are totally acting fine. Annabella does seem to have a cold/teething, so she sounds sick. Tonight before bed, I asked Nicholas for a hug before he went to the bathroom. When I hugged him, he was HOT! I took his temperature and it was 100.5(under arm, so I then added one degree). 101.5! And he is acting *totally* fine(well, not when I took his temp he started complaining his stomach hurt and started to cry...that last three minutes...).

I gave him some motrin to help bring it down and he had some juice before bed as well. Again-jumping around, eating, happy, etc. Just hot. Anyone ever have a fever and associate it with sun exposure? DH did say he complained that he was hot while outside....

I would doubt that it is from the sun, although I guess you never know. But it doesn't sound like it was that hot, so I would bet either virus or just some weird fluke (sometimes I have seen my kids run a slight temp in the late afternoon when they have been really busy & are just exhausted). Hope he feels 100% tomorrow!

Yes, I'm pretty sure too much sun exposure can cause a fever. Sometimes it's just sun-induced illness with a stomach ache and fever. Other times it can be a bit worse and cause symptoms like a stroke (Heat stroke). Did he drink a lot of fluids or get in some shade while he was outside?

    Well...google said....

We have two parties to go to tomorrow...and I told this to the boys and *right after* I said that, I found out he had a fever. He's going to be so heartbroken if he can't go. :( I hope he wakes up totally fine!

Yes-there was water outside, as well as 20 freeze pop wrappers outside. DH says he kept them hydrated and in the shade. I wasn't there.... I'd like to get upset, but I can't. MIL was here too, trying to help dh, so they were outside for most of the day, minus for lunch/nap.

Well, I am no doctor that is for sure, so you never know! Either way, I hope he feels better tomorrow!

This made me chuckle. This would be my kids too, right down to just leaving them on the ground. I hope he feels better tomorrow. A good nights sleep can do wonders.

I'm busting your chops! Ha! I wouldn't think you could get one either. I'm pretty sure at least one of them has had a random fever here or there. I hope to chalk it up to a fluke in the am! FIngers crossed!

And so far this morning.....he is totally fine. You know...jumping on top of your brother, sitting on his head, fine.

Oh good! One of mine woke up with a belly ache, but as soon as I brought out a puke bowl ("just in case") she jumped out of bed and started bugging her sister. You know when they annoy each other, they are feeling fine :)

I bet his skin was hot because he had been in the sun but I doubt it was what we would actually consider a fever. The adding one degree for an axillary temp is actually a myth. We do axillary temps in the hospital on bigger kids and never adjust. It's probably the most accurate way to donut in a kid who is too old for rectal but too young for oral. My rule of thumb is that under 101 (without correcting) is just variations in normal body temp and 101 or higher is probably indicative of illness. This is different from what they told you when they were babies, so it's hard to make the switch. I'm glad he was feeling better. I definitely wouldn't keep a normal acting kid away from a party for an isolated higher than usual temp!
