My girls are somewhere in between needing 2 naps and 1 nap. They wake up around 6:30 am and by 9 am they are both extremely fussy and tired, but they don't want to nap. I can't deal with them both like that for very long, they both want to be held constantly but neither wants me to hold the other one, so it's a miserable fight for who is going to sit on me. I can't get anything done when they are like that! So I put them in their cribs and just let them cry for 30 minutes in the morning or they just lay in the crib looking at the ceiling, I don't know what else to do with them! They won't nap in the morning, but they are exhausted. What should I do? At what age does this work itself out?

If I go for a car ride around 9 they both go to sleep, but I can't drive them around every day. I feel bad that every day I let them cry in their cribs but I can't handle the crying on me and tantrums when they get tired. This has been going on for at least a week now, if not longer.

mine are in that inbetween stage, too. i still refuse to cut it down to one nap, tho. not until they are consistently staying up for a nap. i figure if they don't sleep, at least they are getting "quiet time" in their cribs to kind of chill out for a while.
AND mine are starting to get whiny/clingy again, too. WTH?

i have no advice, sorry! just hugs and to let you know you're not alone!

oh yeah, and mine cry 99.9% of the time that i put them down for a nap/bedtime. :pardon:

How long do they cry for? It doesn't bother me when they sort of whine and whimper for 5 - 10 minutes but then are sleeping. Mine do that most of the time. It's this never ending screaming where they hold their breath and turn bright red and it never ends that makes me feel sorry for them and think I'm doing something wrong. I hate to see them get worked up like that.

30 mins seems like a long time for them to cry at 1 y/o. Have you tried putting some soothing music (lullaby) and go back in their room every 2-3 mins if they cry. Just reassure them that Mommy is here and is time to go night night, don't pick them up, just pad them in their bums or belly and sssshhhhsshh them, then leave the room.
Sometimes at that age, they are tired and start crying to let you know they are tired, but is hard for them to break the cry and go to sleep. They may need a bit of help to do that.

I have always used the above technique when my children don’t want to sleep (they are now 5 and still nap when they are not in school). At 1 y/o you may have to go in their room several times, but it will pay off if you stay consistent.

    Good luck!

mine cry for about 5-10 minutes usually. but, lately marina's been getting up at night  and she'll cry forever! the other night i took her to bed with me, she couldn't get comfortable, so finally i put her back in her crib and she cried for 45 minutes!!! i don't know why this started, but it's like she's an infant again! i didn't think i'd have to do CIO at night ever again!

Aimee, I am still having a similar issue over here too! Like this morning they just didnt want to nap but were miserable so I gave them lunch and put them down early, like 10mins ago! I put them in their crib and wait an hour, sometimes they nap, sometimes they play, and sometimes they cry.
I am seriously contemplating trying 1 nap again. I know its a LONG process, but I need to get stuff done and would like a *plan*.

i just wanted to add that tho mine cry for only 5-10 minutes when i put them down for nap, it's rare that they fall asleep right after that! when they're done crying, they're usually talking, singing, exchanging loveys, poking each other, etc...

What is so bad about napping? I wish someone tucked me in twice a day to nap for as long as I'd like. Mine are napping right now, but after 1 hour of playing that turned into crying and I had to go in there and of course one of them pooped and the other one lost her paci. I swear mine poop at nap time to get out of the nap!

I don't know if this is any help, but at that age (well really at all ages!) we did a lot of naps in the stroller. They sometimes would not fall asleep at home for a morning nap, but if we went for a walk they were out cold. It was kind of a pain having to take them out in the stroller all the time (fortunately this was just on weekends, they were in daycare M-F), but better than not napping. Plus, we got exercise. The weather here is usually nice though.

We are finally out of the crying stage. It is a tough one. I hated to put them down for naps and bedtime and listen to them cry. Oh and then they would cry when they wake up too.
