So our kiddos are a month old today! And the last 2 or 3 days I noticed while Ella was in the hospital she was always getting hungry after an hour after a 2 0z feeding. So I upped her to 2 1/2 oz. She did fine for a couple of feedings but was acting hungry again after an hour after that. So I went ahead and offered her 3 oz and she has polished off every 3 oz bottle we have offered her. But she's stretching longer....about 3 hours during the day and 4 at night.

Her brother started out at 2 1/2 and while I was at the hospital with Ella DH asked me what I thought about upping his bottle because he was getting hungry way too soon as well. So DH upped him to 3 oz, but then last night Ben was so fussy and attacking everything that even got close to his mouth like a little birdie. It had only been like 1 hr 15 min since his last feeding! So at his over night feedings we offered him 3 1/2 oz and he left nothing in the bottle and peacefully drifted off to sleep afterwards.

I don't remember from older DS, but isn't a month old a little too soon to be eating such big bottles? I don't want to over feed them, but they seem so hungry! They are opening their mouths and searching. And poor Ben anytime something comes near his mouth he will strike his head out at it like a snake. It's funny but also sad because I know he's hungry!

    Any advice?

There are lots of growth spurts up through 6 weeks. Are they on EBM or formula? If it's BM, it can be just that they are growing and digesting that milk faster. I say feed them, check for fullness and give more if they still seem hungry.

My daughter was eating like 3-4 oz in the first month-2 months and then slowed down. She was hungry all the time. I fed her what she wanted and wrote it off as a MAJOR growth spurt. So I agree with the pp, feed your kids what they want. When you go for your WBV they will be able to see by the steepness of the weight curve if the kids are gaining weight too fast!

I have def. Learned to feed them what they want. The lactation specialist told me to stop at 2 oz but both my boys were still starving. I finally said screw it and continued giving them 4 oz and they are happy babies.

Thanks ladies! Their pediatrician said that by the time they'd be 40 weeks adjusted he wanted them both at least 8 lbs...that will put them at 6 weeks old. Right now Miss Ella is 5lb8oz and Ben is 6lb8oz. I just wanted to make sure that we have not been over feeding them. They are definitely happy when we just let them have however much they want. :) And as you all know, I'm sure, a happy baby = happy mommy!

Also - to the PP that asked they are on formula. They are taking Similac Neosure right now.

I have to agree with everybody else. Feed them as much as they want. Babies are so well "designed", they know when it's enough. :babyflips:

You really can't overfeed a baby unless you force feed them. As long as they are happily finishing their bottle and not over spitting up, or fussy or gassy afterwards, then it's a good sign they ate as much as they needed.

There's a fairly major growth spurt at 6wks, then again at 4 months. Mine took their highest amount of formula over their 4 month growth spurt (72oz combined per day) and then eased back down again after that.

I don't really believe you can overfeed a baby. I agree with Danielle, as long as they are not spitting up a ton afterward, I say feed them however much they want!

That's kind of my issue though...is Ella is a super refluxer. We were just in the hospital with her until yesterday over the refluxing and apnea. I don't want to starve her at all, but I also don't want her throwing up a ton either.

My son is also a heavy eater. Even at 9 months he loves to have his bottle. He is also a heavy refluxer. When we asked our pediatrician about this he told us that it bothers us much more than it does him. And he's right. I just continue to bring the extra clothes and scrub my rugs and floors everyday. Spitting it up is much better than being hungry.

It sounds pretty normal to me. Mine were taking about that much at 1 month adjusted age.

If I remember right, mine were at 4 and 5 oz at 4 weeks. I agree with all the pp, just feed them til they are satisfied. I also had refluxers. As long as you aren't forcing them to take more when they have clearly shown you they are done, you aren't overfeeding.
