    Hi,

I haven't really introduced myself on the boards. I'm a first time mom with fraternal twin girls. Thalia and Calliope are three weeks old. I'm the youngest in my family and never spent much time around babies. We live an hour or more from family and there is no MOT group nearby. I have lots of questions and these boards have been so very helpful. THANKS!! :D

Right now, we feed the girls every three hours and in between on demand. This week, the girls are taking anywhere from 1.5-4 ounces in a feeding. The routine at each feeding is feed, burp as needed, sit up for a while, change diaper. In the NICU, the nurses were changing the girls before the feedings. We noticed that they tend to need the diaper change after eating rather than before. Any thoughts on this?

Congratulations! I hate that you don't have any help nearby. Twinstuff is a godsend! I think the main reason we get in the habit of changing them before is because it helps to get them both good and awake before a feeding. That way they both eat well for you. I still change mine before, because oftentimes they do have a pretty full diaper, so they're more comfortable when they're nursing. If one loads her diaper while eating, then I change her after also. It's a little more work, but eventually they'll have more regular poops, rather than ALL THE TIME. Now, at 3 weeks, you just want to make sure they're comfortable and dry....that makes for less fussiness and less diaper rash! Good luck!

PS...LOVE the name Calliope. Haven't heard that in awhile.

:welcome: and congratulations on your babies!

I usually changed them first and then fed, for the same reason as Trish, to wake them up! But, if the other way around is working for you, go with it!

I used to change my boys before, cuz they would fall asleep on the bottle and we didn't want to wake them. We never got diaper rash. The first few months are survival, so whatever works just do it. Everything will eventually fall into place.

We feed the boys every 3 hours and change their diapers in the middle of a feeding. It helps to wake them back up esp during night feedings.

I changed mine before feeding as well to wake them up. If changing them after works best for you and them-then I say keep it up! Congrats on your girls, they have such beautiful names!

I also got into the habit of changing them first since they needed to be woken up to eat. If they don't need that, changing afterwards makes sense because there's an actual reflex where feeding makes a newborn poop. Now when I change them depends on how urgently they're demanding food!
