I would like to try feeding Jack and Lily avacado. Should I mash it up and let them self feed or do I spoon feed? Also, they are really good with things in the mesh feeders -so far we have tried bread, toast, apples, melons, and oranges (until I read they should not have this yet, opps). Would you recommend that I give them a large slice in the mesh feeder? How did you do it? Maybe even just a large slice to munch on (but the both have teeth and I am afraid they would be able to get a big slice).

Sorry for the ramble, I am pretty much just trying to find out how you fed avacado at this age.

    TIA

I tried mashing it up with a fork, but Meara didn't do too well with the texture (she's my gagger!). Then I put it in the food processor with a ripe banana and they did better with it, but still weren't wild about the taste.

If they are doing ok with some simple finger foods, I would just cut it up into small cube pieces and let them go to town and have fun. It may be a mess but that is the fun part of them experimenting with new foods. They may or may not like it but don't give up. If they reject it, try again in a week or so. Unfortunately, I didn't keep up with several foods they liked at that stage. I find that they ate and tried way more foods then than they do now. It's a great way to get them to acquire a taste for all kinds of things.

I never had success with my girls liking it, but some mom's in our playgroup would feed it to their kids daily. One mom cut it in half and scooped it right out of the shell and would spoon feed her kids. Another one would mash it with banana and spoon feed her kids that way.

At that age, I mashed avocado, mixed it with a little water or formula if it was still too thick, and fed it with a spoon. I think the mesh feeder would make a huge ginormous mess. :D Mine were not good self-feeders at that age at all -- I don't think they could even handle cheerios until about 9 months, and avocado is very slippery.

I mashed it at that age, and fed it to them off of a spoon.

    Hi Amy

Just one other experience with Avocado...my little ones enjoyed eating mashed but they were up all night. Made the mistake of introducing this one at dinner. I don't know why it didn't go down well, but it didn't -- they both were up off and on all night long -- and I haven't been brave enough to try it again (Tried it at 7 months or so). Good luck to you.

Mashed it with the Magic Bullet and some formula and then spoon fed. They loved it!

we cut it up into little pieces and let him feed himself. he did fine with it, and wasn't crazy about baby food, so we switched to all finger foods, including avocado at 8 months-ish.
