We started out with the Diaper Genie 2, which was great, except for the expensive refills. Then we moved onto the Diaper Champ (new style). My local twins club raved about the Champ, so maybe I just got a dud. It was difficult to flip the top back and forth...sometimes needed a foot on each side... Then I took the top flip part off the other day to clean it and when I put it back on, somehow the side plastic pieces bent and it won't flip at all. I tried to take it back to Target after we first got it, and it was hard to turn but because we had used it (well, we had to USE it to find out it was messed up) they wouldn't return it. And the manufacturer said if the store couldn't return it, then there was nothing they would do. So now I will either have to go back to the Genie and fork out the moola for inserts or try something new... What do you recommend???

Our solution is this -- buy a 1,000-count box of plastic grocery bags at Sam's. Throw diapers and wipes into bag, tie it off, and toss it into a regular covered garbage can. (I like the stainless steel ones with the lids that flip up with a foot lever, that also have a removable bucket insert.)

At the end of the day, empty bucket into outside garbage.

That's it! I've never messed with Diaper Genie or any such systems, because I didn't want to buy the refills.

    I love the Diaper Dekor!

    at Target

It is currently a bathroom trash while we await our twins, but I loved it for use with my daycare kiddos and my oldest child!

I use a regular trash can i bought at walmart. I put Vanilla scented liners in it. If there is a poopy diaper i tie it off and toss in or sometimes i take it outside. I empty the trash can every other day... It is easiest for me and saved me money on buying one of those pricey ones. ;) Good luck!

We have the Diaper Genie II and love it. I know the refills are expensive but I believe they're worth it.

Ditto. I do find that Sam's Club sells the refills a bit cheaper, and you can order them on diapers.com for less than BRU and target. I tend to buy a whole lot at once so that I don't feel like I am forking over $5 a week for refills. Our changing station is in the living room right now though and I really don't want it smelling like dirty diapers, so for now, it's worth it.

We just use regular garbage cans with lids and put the stinky ones in a plasic bag first or I thorw them out the back door in a little box by the door ( that works for now since its so cold here) It wasn't worth it to buy anything I would need so many because I chage the boys in there rooms in our room in the kitchen and downstairs so we have make shift changing stations set up everywhere.

We used a small plastic garbage can with a lid on it. I put stick ups in it and we emptied it every couple of days and never had issues with it. I spent $5 on my garbage can and it worked great.

We use a regular stainless steel trash can with a tight fitting lid that opens with a foot pedal. I put a regular clear plastic trash bag in it and then just throw the trash out about every 18 hours when we fill the can up. We fold/roll our diapers up and secure them with the plastic tabs, and that really helps keep the smell down.

I've never found that we needed a Diaper Genie or anything special; the regular can works fine.

We just have a cheap diaper pail. We rarely use it anymore, though. Once they start solids and their BM stink, you really can't keep diapers in there for very long. We just keep a sack and tie it on the garage door and put diapers in there and at the end of the day, just take it out to the trash. Good luck!

since you already have the diaper genie 2, here's my suggestion. That is what we use and I love it. It's the best disposal system I've ever used.

However, I do not buy the refills for it. Way too pricey for our budget! IF you still have one the the empty "rings" from a refill for it then you are in luck. If not, you may have to buy one more refill, use it, then try my method.

I go to the dollar tree and buy a roll of vanilla scented kitchen trash bags to use in it. You hold the refill in one hand and place a trash bag down the open center hole. Then you kind of push the top edges of the trash bag around the top of the refill thing and VOILA, push down into the top of DG just as you would a refill.

It works for us!! HTH!! Good luck!!

we had the exact same problem with the diaper champ! we bought two (one for each floor of the house), and both were nearly impossible to flip. i definitely coul not have done it with one hand. so we took them back (unused) and bought two regular garbage cans with lids that open with a foot pedal. we have a stick-up freshener on the lid and we change the bag every few days. works great so far and no hassle......

That is exactly what I do too. All of my other mom-friends advised me against any sort of expensive diaper garbage can when I was pregnant - never got one and the stainless steel one we used to use in our kitchen with the flip up and foot lever works great!

The problem with the regular trash cans or even the ones with the tight fitting lids is that the girls will pull up on it. We tried our kitchen one, which is the stainless steel lift out type and Gracie almost got whacked in the head... Did anyone else have the same problem with the diaper champ (it being so hard to flip) or did I just get a dud????!!!! <_<

    We have two of these:
    http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3012714

They use regular trash bags and have the option of being hands free or manual. We have one upstairs and one down. Our trash comes twice a week and we don't always have to empty them both. At the top there is an odor neutralizing attachment, but we haven't replaced ours yet (4months). HTH!

They can sometimes be hard to turn. For me, it tends to be hard to turn as it gets fuller. My husband empties it each morning on his way out the door for work. As long as it is emptied regularly, it works well for me. I will say that wipes and stuff can really mess with how it works. So I wrap the diapers with all of the pooh and such inside and put the wipes in the center, then wrap it into a package using the velcro tabs to make it small and pretty tight. That way, when I have two diapers, I can fit them both in the top, and then flip the lid. Works well for me.

I will say, we use the diaper champ downstairs and upstairs we don't have a diaper pail (I really only change two diapers a day upstairs, morning and bedtime) and I just use grocery store bags hanging on the handle of the changing table. That will need to change when my kids are more mobile upstairs but it works for now.

same here. when we empty it we also spray it down with lysol to keep the stink at bay. can you contact baby trend (i think they are the people who make the diaper champ, right?) and see if there is a replacement part? maybe they can send you a new top. GL!

I've tried both as well. We had a diaper genie II up in the kids nursery, and a diaper champ downstairs in the living room, since we changed them in both places. At first I like the diaper champ, but it STINKS! If you leave a poopy diaper in there for more than like 1 day, the whole thing smells so bad when you change it! Even when I used scented garbage bags.

Since our kids are in daycare now, we don't change the diaper genie all that much. So we needed something that would really contain the smell. We got rid of the champ now, and just use the genie II. I really do like it.

Hope you find something that works for you!

And I bought scented bags. I did tend to ball my diapers up tightly, but I could not bring myself to use the diaper genie because it involved so much petroleum product. We did not have any problems. With two in diapers it easily filled up every other day, or sooner.

I recommend throwing wet diapers straight in the trash, and wrapping dirty diapers in a plastic grocery bag then throwing right in the trash. Empty trash at least once a day (we empty at least once a day, usually twice).

This is much easier than dealing with the diaper disposal system.

ETA: Our garbage can is the covered variety.

We've used the Neat diaper system for almost 4 years, I've never noticed a smell except when we open it to remove the bag. It does require refills though.

I have a diaper champ and a diaper genie. I find the diaper champ easy to use but it doesn't keep the smells down so I put poop diapers in the genie but to save on refils I put the pee diapers in the champ.

Yup, that's how we do it. I had a diaper genie with our first, and I thought it was a total waste. I gave it away and moved on to plastic grocery bags!

I bought a dog food container at Petco and use 13 gallon trash bags in it. The lid snaps shut and the girls (age 2) can't open it. It holds the smell in. It does smell when you open it to throw in another one but the smell goes away as soon as it is snapped shut. We only empty it once a week. Twice a week when they were little.

I have the exact same system, down to rolling up the diapers and using the diaper tabs to secure them. It works great. Sometimes I save "lightly used" ziploc sandwich bags and put the really stinky diapers into the ziploc first. When the bag is full I tie it up and throw it in my big kitchen trash can because I'm too lazy to go outside. There's no smell if you tie up the bag.

BTW I am cheap on the trash bag liners. I don't use them; instead, I save plastic bags from the grocery store and use them as liners. The handles double as convenient ties when the bag is full.

We just use a tall wicker basket with a big black garbage sack. We toss it every day or so or anytime it gets overwhelming. Anything too smelly we just take right outside to the trash. With my oldest, we just put the smelly ones in a shopping plastic sack and hung it on the door knob and took out later in the day.

We tried an older model Diaper Genie and couldn't get it to work. We ended up buying a medium/large plastic garbage can with a lid that opens with the step thing. At first we kept it in the living room next to the pnp diaper changing area. I had to change the bag almost every day due to smell. We had company one day and put the can on the deck. What a perfect solution! The diapers and their smells are all frozen on the deck. We only change the bag when it is full. We live in a small bungalow so it's no problem to take the diapers to the deck. When I'm lazy and it's super cold outside I just collect the pee diapers (tightly wrapped) in a pile by the door and put a whole bunch out at once. Like other people we change bums all over the house, living room, bathroom and nursery usually.
I'm not sure what we will do when it warms up. I've read that some people use cinnamon in their cloth diaper pails so I'm planning on buying it in bulk!

We have the diaper champ and now love it. We did have the same problem when we first got it though. Check and see if the ring around the top on both sides is fitted into the slots correctly. Once we found that and fixed it - it's worked wonderfully.

You do have to make sure to do the diaper with wipes up into a ball before putting it in there though. Also my mom tried to use a target bag with handles and the handles kept getting stuck so we use plain scented trash bags and it works great. HTH

Ok, so I contacted the company with unsatisfactory results... They told me to return it to the store I bought it from, but they wouldn't let us (even though we told them it was defective) because we didnt' have the box. So I contacted the company again, just wanting a replacement. And got sent lots of directions I didn't ask for and already knew. YES, I read the instruction. YES, I tightly wrapped the diapers. NO, I did not try to flip a wipe. NO, I AM NOT AN IDIOT. Arggg. Lo and behold, I am packing some stuff up in the basement and come across the box :D So next morning I pack it up and march it back in the store to swap. Got a new Champ and it works SO much better!! I can push it back and forth with just a pinky! What a difference. Wish I had found that box a few months back!!
