this may be random but i want to do something very special for my DH from the boys. i was thinking of making a garden stepping stone with their handprints. now - i know they will only be a few weeks old but i thought it would be cute and sentimental.

has anyone ever made anything like this before and can offer any insight?

I have not made this but I've seen pictures and I think it's a great idea. I'm sure your husband will love it.

I think it is a very cute idea ~ though I know when I tried to get crafty with handprints when my girls were newborns it was VERY hard to get an actual handprint (except for in the hospital!) They keep their little hands in a fist most of the time, so it is hard to get them to flatten out.
Maybe when they are sleeping would work?
You can also buy the non-toxic ink & then stamp thier ink onto some nice paper & have it framed?

I have done this with my kids and I would recommend waiting until next Father's Day. I did it when my younger daughter was 6 months old and it was really tough to get a good handprint and then getting the concrete off of her hands was really tough.

What about getting a picture frame with 3 spaces? You can put a picture of the boys in the middle space and then put their foot prints w/ their name and age on either side. I think it would be mcuh easier to get a foot print at this point. I've done something similar using non-toxic tempura paint and it was really cute.

i did it for my DH the year the babies were born, Make it with there foot prints as others had said they will just ball up there fists if you try to do there hands.
i did one per day and got every thing ready stamped there feet and put there names in it on top in stones and wrote things like happy fathers day, i love you etc.
than i let them dry under the crib where i knew he would not look. just read the directions and get everything set up first.
They came out so very cute and we are so happy to have them now as they are getting bigger.
we put them in our flower garden every spring and bring them in the house before winter. they were a bit wet from the rain but here is how the ones i made came out.
    have fun!

not sure what brand it was but i got it as our local craft store "Micheals"
i also bought two bowls at the dollar store to mix it up in so i could just throw them away when i was finished.
i know once you mix it and poor it you only have so much time to push items into it before it starts to harden.
perhaps you can send DH out with one baby at a time on different days. tell him its one on one time for him and that baby and you and the other baby.
by the time i made them my DH had gone back to work so it was a bit easier to hide them. worth the hassel of hiding them.
he was so suprised and loved them.
Good luck please post your pictures when they are done.

I was thinking of doing something similar. My dh made an awesome little framed picture of the three kiddos hand prints, I have to top that. ;)

I just need to get the kit now, and I had no idea where to get it, so thanks for posting this.

I thought about doing the same thing..... with footprints though. My babies will be born tomorrow (I'm being induced on 5/22) I also want to get one of those Hallmark cards that you can record a message on and see if I can get the babies to coo or cry or record whatever baby sounds they'll make and give that to daddy as well!!! I think that will be soooo precious!! :D

Oh my gosh, I made one for DH last Fathers day when DS was 9 months old....BAD IDEA! I'm chuckling just thinking about it. He kept grabbing the cement and making a fist. Oh gosh I was so frustrated by the time I was done. You can't tell it's really his hands but it's the thought that counts.

I got my kit at Michaels. I like it just because it has sparkles and pretty baubles in it. I don't care now about how his hands DIDN'T turn out. Just a big laugh now!

We did MANY hand and footprints when dd#2 was born and the easiest was a more clay type that could be remolded and you could try again like playdoh, very similar to this (only we had the girl version) we got it as a gift so I don't know where you can get it but I got this by googling princess hand print (what the container said LOL). That is a great idea!!! Here's the link:

Hmmm I don't know! I'll try to google and find a different but similar one that has a better description of what it's made of etc as this link doesn't really say much. I would say probably not (what would happen to playdoh out there? It would probably disentigrate LOL) :( I just liked this cuz it was easy to get an impression and if you didn't you could try and try again. I'll look and see what I can find for ya!

ETA: just thought of something, maybe if you coated it with a sealer or something...hmmm I'll still look though

    awww that's sweet.

my DH is very handy, or thinks he is..lol, so when father's day rolls around i'm going to get some soft plush tools for the babies to play with and something that says "daddy's little helper"....he is very anxious for them to help him in the garage. my boys won't be born yet but i think he will like it just the same. either that or i'll look for something john deere or snap-on tool related for a onesie...lol, he's obsessed with his tools and having the kids learn to mow the lawn.

but i love your idea. i think it's very sentimental and something that your DH can charish for a lifetime!

Sorry I'm not really finding anything :( Do you have a Michaels craft store nearby? Maybe they could help you. Or if you have a place where you can paint your own mug and stuff they might have a step stone kit that your kids could do and then have it fired in their kiln. The other one is nice for in home use that's for sure. ;) You could also look into a sealer for the clay for outdoors. HTH!
