Kate has been walking for 2 months now and Sophie has been for a month. I don't expect Sophie to be great at it but I feel that Kate should know what she is doing. However both girls fall down so much! They walk, then fall, and then cry a bit. Is it a balance thing? Usually they aren't tripping over anything. Do they need glasses? Is this normal? I don't remember DS falling so much.

My girls have been walking for 7 months already ( ) and their little legs get covered in bruises upon bruises! I think a lot of it is still a learning curve. First it's cautious slow walking, then we'll move a little faster, now we'll try this, next we'll run, etc. So each time they try a 'new' way of walking requires that they (literally) get their feet under them again.

Plus I don't think my girls watch where they're going half the time. So they trip on my leg or a block or something because they're so intent on what they're going to get themselves into.

We were falling for a long time. Heck, Ben falls at least a few times a day STILL. I probably wouldn't be too concerned! They are figuring out how to use those little legs still!

Yeah, mine still fall a lot! Jake much more than Hailey, but I can't believe all the bumps, bruises and scrapes! And we actually just took them to the eye doctor (or pedi suggested it) and everyone is A-OK ... so they can see, just not walk that great!

Mine have been walking for about 6 weeks now and I'll tell you what...we fall left and right. A lot of it is that they get excited and try to walk faster but don't quite have the skill for that. Plus, they like to carry/drag stuff so they trip over that, don't watch where they are going, and they, in generally, seem unsteady. I figure it'll take a while before things are "smooth."

Thanks for the reassurance everyone! Maybe DS didn't cry as much when he fell. Or I have mommy memory!

Mine are 2.5 and they still fall! At this age, it's more a question of going too fast and not paying attention. But for new walkers, it doesn't take much to distract them -- a toy they're holding, looking at you, thinking about where they want to go.... They take their focus off of standing upright for a second, and BOOM.

As far as the crying, we took a cue from our daycare and used "brush it off." If they are really upset, of course we let them cry (and comfort them). But for the little oopsies that happen a zillion times a day, we would pick them up (if necessary) and very cheerfully say "Brush it off!" and make the motion as if you're brushing dirt from your hands. It seemed to help them get over the shock of falling and just get on with their business.

Yep, they still fall down on a daily basis. I also kind of do "brush it off", but with a kiss and it's all better. I just kiss my hand and put it wherever they fell. It's perfectly normal to stumble a lot when they are new walkers.

Sounds right to me. T&T were very much about forward motion and not so concerned with where their feet landed. They got better about keeping their feet under them but we still go through an awkward period now and then and my mother tells me that older brother was the same way and you could always tell when he'd had a growth spurt. We also used the "brush it off" technique to not have 1000 cry fests a day.

Mine fall a lot! We finally got past the cry everytime we fell phase. Now if I can just keep them bruise free to get a dang picture taken!

Barefoot and/or properly fitting shoes are very IMPT.
I found that my kids were falling alot when their shoes were a little too big or wide or whatever. Now I swear by getting them measured every 3 months and buying quality shoes. I'll make efforts to save $$$ on clothing, diapers, toys, etc. But when it comes to shoes, good fitting quality shoes are very important.
