Fairy costume by Saturday?

This is not a Halloween question...

I just looked again at the invite for a birthday party the girls are going to on Sat., and it says "wear your fairy or elf best." We don't have anything fairy-related in our house. I sure don't want to shell out for two full fairy costumes just for one birthday party.... I'll check the consignment store, but as a backup, do they sell fairy wings at Target?

Do you have a Dollar Tree store nearby? I was there yesterday and they had fairy wings and a bunch of other stuff. We also got a fairy costume in the dress-up section at Walmart last year in August. It was cheaper than we would've paid had we waited for the Halloween stuff.

Do you have a H&M near you? They have a dance section that includes cheap tutus and fairy wings. or you can just go with a tutu, and make a fairy hat out of construction paper, glitter and some streamers. Have fun!

ETA: You can see the H&M tutus in my avi!

Actually I got some pretty cute ones for 5 dollars at a Family Dollar store in Missouri last fall. Wings, a skirt, slippers, headband and wand. If that doesn't work you can make some. I have a fairy craft book and it has wings made by cutting pattern out of tissue paper, then laying it on a sheet of plastic, (it suggests plastic wrap) painting it with paper mache paste, let it dry, lift it off the plastic wrap and it will be stiff, but thin. Then cut a small card, attach each wing to the card and staps to go around the girls arms so that the card is in between their shoulder blades.

If you wanted to do elves. You can make a cute elf hat by taking a large square of felt, fold it in half diagonally, sew together one side, then fold up the long corner. Decorate with ribbons and a jingle bell!

Tutus are super easy to make, too. Here are some instructions.

We used to make wings with a wire hanger bent into the shape, covered in pantyhose, then tied on with ribbons. Then glue on some glitter.

Fairy wings at Dollar Tree or Family Dollar--cheap.

Wear a leotard, tee-shirt w/ shorts & tutu (cheap at H& M or JoAnn) or pink dress...add streamers or sparkley ribbon to a headband and you are good to go!! Wear slippers or ballet flats (if you have them) &fun tights.

You could even do some face glitter....wands are cheap too. (Target, JoAnns, Micheals---have make your own kits for less than $3)

Thanks everyone! My town is sadly lacking in discount stores, other than Target, and with working 9-5 I don't think I can manage to make anything between now and Sat. (plus I am hopelessly uncrafty -- Michael's scares me to pieces) -- but I'm sure I can get something together with a combo of purchased fairy accessories and body glitter!

OK, so I got fairy skirts (like tutus, but a little fancier and with beads around the bottom) at the consignment store -- they were $10 each, which is a little much, but they look like they'll hold up for more than one wearing, unlike the $2 ones.

I got body glitter at Target ($3 for 4 tubes).

And I got wings for $2.50 a pair and wands for $1.50 each at Savers, plus a can of spray-in hair glitter.

And we already have leotards and tights, so I think we're all set! I don't think they even know this is going to be a fairy party -- they're going to be so excited. :)

Sounds good! You can also talk them into wearing it for Halloween. :)

If they are anything like my girls they will wear them everyday for the rest of the year!

Sounds like you did a great job pulling together some cute costumes! Hope they have a blast! We'd love to see some pics, if you have a chance! :)

Party One Superstore always has fairy stuff year round. That's where we got the girls wings and wands and things for Halloween, but I've been there many times throughout the year and they always have that kind of stuff for little kids.
