I am completely bummed about the fact that I failed the 1 hr test. I am dreading the 3 hr test. I love the nurses, but the one that does the blood draw, is not very good at it. At least she hasn't been with me so far. It took 2 tries to draw blood last time... can you imagine trying it for 4 different draws? :nea: If I do have g/d, can anyone tell me what to expect? This is something very new to me and I was hoping to escape it. What should I do to prepare for the test? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I just want to have 2 healthy little ones. Everything has gone so great so far... I am really kinda sad about the prospects. :(

I failed my one hour 2 weeks ago, and diabetes run in my family… I had my three hour last week…the blood part wasn’t so bad (I did look like a heroin addict because they weren't the best in the lab) it was the no water or food… and then for a little bit you get dry mouth… I did it at the same time another mom was doing hers, and she got nauseous, but I had it run through me (if you know what I mean)… I took naps out in the back seat of my car between blood work (set the alarm on my phone) and that made it go by fast… but I won’t lie… the other girl was in tears… it turned out I had great “fasting” sugar level, failed one hour, but did great at hours 2 and 3… so I passed… I think its common… I wouldn’t worry yet

I failed the first one too. too help for your three hour one, don't have sugary foods or candy, drink lots of water. You can't eat anything I think 15 hrs before the test, so prepare for 18 hours of not eating.

You have to stay in the lab area so bring something to read or do, you will get bored. you get pricked three times, every hour. good luck

I agree many have failed the 1 hr (they say it is a twin thing) and then pass the 3 hour. I did too! Failed then passed. I took books to read and a journal to write in. If you have an mp3 or ipod that would be good too! Sorry you had someone that didn't know how to draw blood well. GL and keep us posted.

P.S. My clinic said that if I failed the 3 hr that I would come in and take an educational class about everything I would need to do. From what I hear the diabetes resolves after birth and IF you do have it they are aware and won't let anything happen to the babies.

I also failed my 1 hour test and passed my 3 hour one. Definitely drink lots of water before you start fasting. The nurse also suggested that I drink plenty of water in between blood draws. Check with your OB about that - see if that makes a difference. GOOD LUCK!!! :D

I also failed my one hour test but passed my three hour test. My only advice would be drink lots and lots of water, take something with you to read, and if possible have someone drive you home. I felt like I was driving drunk after that test...really dizzy and floaty feeling. I stopped at the McDonald's drive thru on the way home and ate myself silly but it was wonderful! Good luck! You're chances of passing are greater than failing I believe.

THANK YOU!!!! It makes me feel sooooo much better to hear that so many of you passed the 3 hour test. I think it is cruel that they make us go hungry for so long!!! I can barely make it an hour without some kind of small snack, even if it's a couple of bites of fruit! I will keep you updated. I decided to go in on the 17th. They were able to give me a choice of the 10th or the 17th, so maybe I didn't fail it by that much. I know I don't feel a whole lot different now than I did when I took the 1 hr test before and passed. That was last fall I believe. I haven't gained a lot of weight, I have only gained 15 lbs all together and other than the fact that I am a little bit thirstier, (I know is a sign) it doesn't seem to be different. The only thing that I can think of that is different at this point is the fact that I am further along, and I did start drinking sodas more often in the last few months.... I can stop that again if I need too.

Well, thanks again. If anyone else has advice... I am all ears!!

I had gestational diabetes when pregnant with my first - singleton. The tests were terrible but in the end it wasn't so bad. I just had to be careful on what I ate. I would feel really unwell if I ate to many carbs. Once I realised that it was ok. For the vast majority of women it resolves itself once you give birth.

Funny though I was fine with the twins. My doctors were positive that I was going to get it again so I didn't do the 1 hour test - yip straight onto the big one. When the results were negative he then said we will test you again in a few weeks so I ended up having to do it twice - and negative both times!

Do you know the number you got on the 1 hour? I failed the 1 hour, the nurse told me I would probably pass the 3 hour and I did! I was worried and convinced I wouldn't pass though because I have PCOS and have major blood sugar issues! Honestly, the 3 hour was bad for me because my blood sugar drops fast. So when I went in, my blood sugar was already starting to drop. The sugar in the drink didn't kick for me until about hour 2 or so. So, it was bad for about 1 1/2 hours then got better. I still felt icky all day though. But I did pass the 3 hour!!!

I failed the 1 hour test too with a 142, normal is suppose to be 130. I passed the 3 hour test. I was very happy about that because really with twins you end up spending most of the week at the dr's office.

Some things to do before being retested, no sugar, no white processed foods (white bread, white rice etc, nothing with white flour), and no high in starch foods. Eat plenty of protein the night before. You can have veggies but make it a low carb meal. Definitely drink plenty oof water.

    Good luck with your test!

No, I don't know the number I got. I don't think it must have been too high, though. They aren't pushing me to come in next week to do the test. They told me that I could come in on either of my next two appointments and have the test done. I decided to wait until the 17th to have the 3 hour test done. I am worried about the whole blood sugar dropping too. I know there are times when if I don't eat certain types of food or enough of them, I get really weak, shakey, and dizzy feeling. That is a norm for me. I had pancreatitis years ago, because of my gallbladder. I had gallstones, and one was lodged in a pancreatic duct. Since my gallbladder was removed and I had the pancreatitis, I have had those issues. Doctors have always found me to be okay, and I have my amalayse number checked on a regular basis. I think I will take a snack with me, so that when all the testing is completed, I can eat something before I leaving the doctor's office. Then it's on to take out or Applebees!!!! (depending on how starved I am) ;)
