Hi. My 2 yr olds both got several mosquito bites, :( but one got 2 on his face. One over his eye, and another on his temple on the same side of his face. This happened Sunday evening. Monday morning, his forehead, nose (space between his eyes) and temple area were all swollen and warm. He had a 99.7 temp. I took him to the pedi and they said that it was just a reaction to the mosquito bite, nothing to worry about. This morning, he is still swollen and now his eye on that side is half way swollen shut and his eyelid is red. Should I take him back, or does this sound normal? Other DS didn't have the same reaction to his bites. (nor did I... I got about 5!) Any thoughts? Would you worry?

    Thank you in advance!

My DD swells quite a bit with mosquito bites, when she gets several. Our pedi said we could give Benadryl and that really helped a lot! Call your pedi and ask, they should be able to give you the dosage for Children's Benadryl.

I would definitely call your pediatrician. Benadryl sounds like a good idea.

Also, just keep an eye out for any kind of trouble breathing, that sort of thing, and call immediately if you see anything like that . (not to worry you, I just come from a family that has severe (!) reactions to bee stings).

My older DD swells horribly when she get mosquito bites. One time we thought she had a very bad spider bite behind her ear - it looked aweful, red, hot, swollen, and took her to the ER. She was fine with a little bit of Benadryl. She's 6 and it still happens often but not every bite. My Ped said to treat the symptoms and she's been fine.

One of my sons has similar reactions to mosquito bites. Benadryl, Tylenol & Neosporin seem to help.

My Allison is very allergic to mosquito bites, as I was when I was little. She will have huge knots for about two days when she is bitten. I have to put Off on her everytime she goes outside, and even then there is always some place that I have missed that will get bitten. It always looks terrible and itches very bad. I will put some anti-itch cream to help with the itching, but other than that, there is nothing I can do.

My youngest daughter is the same way. She gets welts for each bite. They go away in a couple of days. I'd still watch closely, though, it sounds like it's okay. I can't wait for the first frost (in a way) to get rid of the mosquitoes. We have to worry about west nile, etc here in MA.

Mine had a bite near her eye swell up and it was cellulitis, an infection. She had to have antibiotics. Within 24 hrs of taking the first dose she looked immeasurably better. It's probably an allergic reaction, but I would take him in anyway, just in case, because cellulitis can occasionally be dangerous, especially near an eye.

Thanks for the input! The swelling has gone down quite a bit as of this morning, so I'm thinking it's an allergy. I'm doing some research on cellulitis now though, just in case... thanks for that suggestion.

I have to go start cuddling other DS a little more now, as I've been pouring on the love to the one because he looks so pitiful all swollen.

I use bug repellant in lotion or wipe form on mine's face. It's easier to apply. I put it around his hairline & that seems to keep the bugs away.

i am very sensitive to mosquito bites...so obviously one of the girls had to inherit this from me right?? well, one of my dd got a bite on the side of her eye and it really scared me a few hours later. B/c her whole eye swelled up and looked like she had been punched!!!! she is perfectly ok now, so dont worry...just a little benadry will do fine!
